Adoptions Department, Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Salary: $75,000 - $85,000 Annually
Full Time (40 hours per week; includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed)
Helen Woodward Animal Center is hiring an Animal Health Manager for our Adoptions Medical department. This opportunity will provide you the chance to directly influence, manage, and lead the direction of our adoptions medical staff.
Responsibilities Department Leadership & Operations- Oversee the daily operations of the Adoptions Medical Department to ensure high standards of animal health, care, and disease control consistent with Center goals.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate veterinary assistants in accordance with medical protocols established by the Adoption Medical Director and administrative policies of the Center.
- Manage veterinary assistant scheduling to ensure adequate coverage for surgery, onsite and offsite intake, foster checkups, and other medical needs while remaining within budgeted hours.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records, documentation, and database entries for all animals.
- Assist veterinarians in surgery, including anesthetic induction, patient preparation, intraoperative assistance, and recovery monitoring.
- Perform and train others in routine medical procedures, including vaccinations, fecal exams, medication administration, IV catheter placement, blood and urine collection, and dental prophylaxis and extractions.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of medical supplies and medications and complete purchase requisitions per Center guidelines.
- Perform and supervise offsite medical duties, including intake examinations and routine procedures, as needed.
- Communicate departmental needs, concerns, and operational issues to the Veterinarian (medical) and Adoption Services Director (non-medical) in a timely manner.
- Train non-medical Adoptions staff on medical policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with Center policies, safety standards, sanitation requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Represent the Center with professionalism at all times.
- Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license required.
- Minimum two years of management experience in a veterinary or animal health setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of small animal medicine, including radiography, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, pharmacology, laboratory procedures, and husbandry.
- Ability to operate radiography and anesthesia equipment and produce diagnostic-quality images.
- Strong verbal and written communication, customer service, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Ability to lift up to 55 lbs. unassisted and up to 100 lbs. with assistance; safely handle strong dogs and fractious cats.
- Proficiency with PC-based software, including Microsoft Office and Windows.
- Ability to work around animal hair and dander.
- Valid driver s license, proof of insurance, and acceptable DMV driving record required.
