Job Summary

The Tribal Consultant will support the cultural resource and archaeological survey crews conducting heritage surveys within a National Forest. The Tribal Consultant serves as a designated representative of an appropriate local Tribe and provides tribal knowledge, cultural perspective, and awareness during field survey activities. The role supports the respectful identification and consideration of cultural resources and areas of tribal significance while working collaboratively with archaeological field personnel.

The Tribal Monitor supports cultural resource survey activities by providing Tribal knowledge, observations, and perspectives during fieldwork. In accordance with contract requirements, Tribal Monitors must be designated by the tribal leadership of the appropriate Tribe for the geographic area where work is performed.

Up to 90%. This position requires travel to designated project and field sites within the National Forest. The Tribal Monitor will accompany archaeological survey crews and perform work in outdoor field environments. Travel frequency and duration will vary based on project location, survey schedules, and operational needs. Must have active and valid driver’s license throughout employment.

• Provide tribal cultural knowledge and perspective relevant to the project area and field activities.
• Observe ground-disturbing, archaeological survey, or other assigned field activities for the presence of cultural resources or areas that may be culturally significant.
• Assist the project team in recognizing cultural resources, traditional cultural places, or other areas of potential tribal concern encountered during field activities.
• Communicate observations, concerns, and culturally relevant information to designated project leadership and archaeological personnel.
• Advise project personnel when field activities encounter resources or circumstances that may warrant additional tribal consideration or consultation.
• Support culturally appropriate treatment and protection of sensitive cultural resources encountered during project activities.
• Participate in field discussions regarding avoidance, protection, monitoring, or other appropriate measures when cultural resources are identified.
• Coordinate professionally with archaeologists, field supervisors, Forest Service personnel, and other project stakeholders as appropriate to the assignment.
• Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding archaeological sites, culturally sensitive locations, tribal information, and other protected information.
• Follow established project protocols, safety requirements, access restrictions, and instructions while working within Sierra National Forest.
• Accurately document field observations or provide information necessary for project documentation when requested and appropriate.
• Immediately communicate significant or unexpected cultural resource observations or discoveries to designated project personnel.
