ENGL 1100 Embedded Course Mentors (ECM) are student leaders embedded within first-year composition courses to support new college students in their transition to college-level writing and academic expectations. Unlike traditional tutoring, peer mentoring is built on consistent, relational, and contextual support.

Peer Mentors attend class alongside their assigned section of ENGL 1100 and serve as accessible resources for students both during and outside of class. Through one-on-one or small group sessions, mentors help students manage assignments, apply writing concepts, reflect on academic progress, and develop effective writing habits.

This is a paid student position that offers meaningful leadership and professional development opportunities while directly contributing to your peers' success.

• Attend one assigned section of ENGL 1100 regularly (2–3 class meetings per week). This means you will spend 3 hours a week in an ENGL 1100 course.
• Help facilitate class activities
• Hold weekly office hours to provide individual and small group academic support
• Guide students in building effective habits to support their success, including managing their time to complete assignments
• Connect students with campus resources, such as the Writing Center, to further support their success
• Communicate consistently with the course instructor and mentoring program staff
• Participate in required summer training and periodic check-ins during the semester

• GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Successfully completed ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1200 with a grade of B or higher
• Will be at least a sophomore in Fall 2026
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to:
  • Facilitate group discussions
  • Guide peers through reflection and self-assessment of work during course time
  • Offer feedback in a supportive, encouraging manner
  • Help students develop confidence in their skills and encourage help-seeking behaviors
• Available to attend the assigned ENGL 1100 course
• File a  FAFSA
• Able to commit to 6–8 hours of work per week
• Available for 5 hours of training--a mixture of synchronous Zoom training and asynchronous D2L training
