West Land is seeking on-call Archaeology Field Technicians for our growing California Cultural Resources program! The Archaeology Field Technician performs surveys, testing, and data recovery excavations in the field and conducts related follow-up work in the laboratory when needed. Responsibilities include pedestrian survey, shovel testing, processing and cataloging materials, entering artifact collections into the database, performing preliminary artifact analysis, maintaining the archaeological library, and supporting overall laboratory maintenance and organization.

This role requires archaeological field and laboratory experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a cohesive team.

What will I be doing?
  • Pedestrian survey and excavation of shovel test probes
  • Mapping of STPs and survey transects using handheld devices
  • Recording fieldwork methods and findings on field forms
  • Photography of fieldwork, sites, and other subjects as needed
  • Archaeological site recording, under supervision
  • Maintenance and organization of field equipment
  • Construction monitoring and follow safety guidance when working around heavy equipment
  • Conduct survey of existing collections to determine processing stage and assess level of completion.
  • Apply repository requirements for preparation, handling, and storage of archaeological project collections.
  • Synthesize findings and complete curation tasks per repository agreements.
  • Implement proper artifact handling, cleaning, labeling, treatment, and storage techniques appropriate for artifact type.
  • Meet deadlines and project budgets as directed by the Project Manager or Laboratory Director.
  • Verbally report collection schedule and progress to the Laboratory Director.
  • Translate analysts' needs for artifact preparation and organize for analysis.
  • Pull artifacts from the main collection and organize for analysis.
  • Perform preliminary analysis and sorting as directed by analysts.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Inventory laboratory and field equipment; report damages, needs, and shortages.
What qualifications are required for this role?
  • Associate's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Related field and laboratory archaeological experience required.
  • Prior related experience in both field and laboratory archaeology.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a cohesive team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and creative environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products.

This is a non-exempt position with a salary range of $27.00 - $31.00 per hour. As an on-call employee, your hours will fluctuate from week to week. Typical project assignments vary in length from a single day to up to ten-day durations. For out-of-town work that includes overnight, or longer duration stays, per diem and/or single-occupancy hotel rooms are provided.
