Job Description and Duties

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES INTERN - COLORADO DESERT DISTRICT

"Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. The reporting location for this position is Colorado Desert District Office in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the general direction of Senior Environmental Scientist.

Work will occur throughout the Colorado Desert District, including ABDSP, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park (CRSP) in Julian, and Palomar Mountain State Park (PMSP) in Palomar, CA. The position has available short-term seasonal funding for 40 hours per week, as five 8-hour workdays. Alternate schedules may occur as needed, and overtime hours may be available based on project needs and funding availability.

Initial main duties include surveys for listed riparian birds (least Bell's vireo, western cuckoo) and flat-tailed horned lizards (FTHL), record keeping, and data management. Additional field work may involve native and invasive plant populations, aquatic animals, small mammals, camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, and forestry/measuring fuel loading. Participates in public outreach events, document editing, and creation of visitor/staff updates. The position requires driving and maintaining State 4WD and other street-legal vehicles, use of handheld phones, tablets, or paper data sheets to record field data, and may include use of hand and power tools to maintain trails.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification. Appointments to this class are made under temporary authority (TAU) and are limited to no more than nine months of full-time equivalent work. No permanent appointments will be made. The time a person can serve in a temporary appointment must not exceed 9 months in 12-consecutive months or 189 days of work.

When serving in a TAU appointment, the incumbent does not acquire probationary or permanent status or rights.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver's license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver's license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver's license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

State housing may be required. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment:
Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Working Conditions

All field work occurs in remote and often extreme conditions, with maximum temperatures of 105°F (avian surveys) to 115°F (FTHL surveys). Must be able to start before dawn each morning, drive a 4WD vehicle in off-road conditions with a partner to remote sites, and hike off-trail in rugged terrain carrying moderate loads for several hours. May hike up to 10 miles per day.

Proficiencies in ArcGIS (Survey
