Location: Vernon
VWRC - Laboratory Technician
Reporting to the Manager, Vernon Water Reclamation Centre (VWRC), this position is responsible for the quality assurance of laboratory work related to wastewater treatment, reclaimed water, and septic functions for the City of Vernon.
Duties Include- Co-ordinates and performs the laboratory analysis, testing, record keeping, and all other functions in the laboratory.
- Obtains samples from various sources throughout the Water Reclamation Plant and the Reclaimed Water Irrigation system; evaluates, calculates, and correlates laboratory results; advises and assists VWRC staff in determining causes and remedies where tests indicate faults in the treatment systems.
- Develops and implements sampling techniques and procedures relative to wastewater treatment and reclaimed water irrigation.
- Records and maintains the process control procedures, data management and recording systems.
- Maintains accurate records as required.
- Compiles and completes related reports such as the VWRC Annual Report.
- Operates the process computers and auto-analyzers.
- Replenishes and safeguards stock and supplies as used in the laboratory.
- Performs routine maintenance, care and cleaning of laboratory equipment and process monitoring equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
- All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services; duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.
Education and Experience
- Completion of a two-year Water Quality Technology diploma program or recognized equivalent.
- Minimum one year experience in a related position.
- Valid BC Driver’s License.
- WHMIS Training.
- Level I First Aid.
- A combination of related education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- All laboratory equipment required to complete all analysis, computer and related software, general office equipment.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of chemical, biological and physical testing and analysis, including the preparation of samples and the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater quality sampling analysis and reporting techniques as they relate to Standard Methods.
- Knowledge of computers with respect to data input, developing and managing a database, and generating regular reports.
- Understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes.
- Experience in the use of lab and test equipment and ability to identify equipment failure and/or repair requirements.
- Ability to coordinate the procedures of a laboratory operation.
- Ability to interpret and apply laboratory results.
- Knowledge of computer operation and programming pertaining to the operation of the auto analyser.
- Basic mechanical aptitude is required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science Degree from a recognized University in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Fresh Water Science or recognized equivalent.
- 5 years related experience in an accredited chemistry, bacteriological, or environmental laboratory.
Skills and Abilities
- Accredited with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia.
