Job Overview
School Police Officers are responsible for the protection of all life and property on all Lawton Public School District properties. Basic patrol and observation to ensure the safety and cooperation of the entire District. This approach involves developing and maintaining positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff members.
Qualifications- Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- CLEET Certification is required
- No felony convictions
- Must pass a background check
- Must pass MMPI
- Must be able to complete the Field Training Officer Program
- Have high principles, ethics, and moral character
- Have excellent communication skills
- Must be able to work in a school setting
- Must qualify yearly with duty weapon

Essential Duties- Provide for School safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.
- Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities.
- Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in the patrol area.
- Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
- Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal acts or statute violations were involved.
- Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.
- Provide security for extracurricular activities and sporting events.
- On-Call rotation every 8-10 weeks.
- Cooperate with other law enforcement officials.
- Perform other duties as directed by supervisors.
- LPS police officers have the power to perform general police duties, such as deterring and preventing unlawful behavior, issuing citations, serving warrants, apprehending offenders, making arrests, preserving crime scenes, investigating crimes, conducting surveillance, and testifying in court.
- LPS police officers patrol buildings, grounds, and facilities, and look out for criminal and suspicious activity as well as for violations of laws, regulations, policies, and rules. They also watch for unusual conditions as well as for signs of fire and safety hazards. As part of their police duty, these law enforcement officers respond to a wide range of requests for service from students, faculty, and others on campus.

Work EnvironmentThe work of a police officer is risky by its very nature. While most of the work includes developing positive relationships with students, law enforcement officials may face threatening situations when responding to school safety concerns. Duties occur inside and outside of the school and also include coverage of some evening extracurricular activities.
Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
