Water Distribution Operator I / SGV and Fontana Water Company

San Gabriel Valley Water Company and Fontana Water Company has an opening for a Water Distribution Operator I.

Due to the on-call nature of the position, candidates must live within 50 miles of the location they are applying for.

Under the direction of a Water Distribution Operator III or Water Distribution Operator II, assists with the installation, repair and maintenance of the company's distribution system.

• Assist with installation and repair of water mains, fire hydrants, valves and services.
• Perform meter exchanges and minor meter repairs.
• Flush fire hydrants for water quality control.
• Assist with inspection and operation of gate valves.
• Maintain excavations until permanent paving repairs can be made.
• Install, relocate and adjust meter boxes and valve cans.
• Subject to 24-hour on-call status.
• Other tasks and duties as directed

Skills, knowledge and physical requirements include, but are not limited to:

• Some knowledge of basic plumbing repair and installation.
• Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools associated with plumbing repair and installation.
• Some knowledge of pneumatic equipment, including jackhammers and tampers.
• Ability to dig and work at depths in excess of 5 feet.
• Ability to lift 100 lbs. to waist level and maneuver equipment and implements weighing in excess of 150 lbs.
• Ability to perform repetitive physical activities, including sit, stand, walk, reach, grasp, push, pull, bend, stoop, climb, crouch, squat, crawl, and twist and dig.
• Familiarity with safety practices and procedures.
• Must be dependable, punctual and have good attendance.
• Neat and presentable appearance.
• Ability to interact with co-workers and supervisors in a cooperative and professional manner.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and write legibly.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

The following are required:

• High school diploma.
• Valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• DHS Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certificate or obtain one within 18 months after employment.
