Directs the activities of a line crew in the construction and maintenance of power lines and occasionally helps the Community Broadband Network team with the maintenance and installation of fiber optic lines. May direct more than one crew at a time and act as an interim Electric Department Superintendent for short periods of time. This position reports to the Electric Department Superintendent.
Essential Functions:- Responsible for the coordination and completion of construction and maintenance of individual projects by the assignment of personnel, utilization of materials and coordination of other resources and utilities by a safe and efficient manner in the construction and maintenance of the Electric System. Occasionally helps CBN with the fiber system.
- Instructs and teaches apprentices and new journeyman in line work operations, equipment operation, tool use and other appurtenances used in this line of work.
- Coordinates work with customers and contractors.
- Plans a work schedule utilizing manpower, materials, and equipment. Supervises the work and use of labor and equipment, maintains the paperwork that accompanies said work.
- Checks construction work is in conformance with Electric System standards and keeps informed on changing standards in specifications, work methods, and applications.
- Assures all safety rules and procedures are followed in the day-to-day maintenance and construction of the system.
- Periodically serve On Call/Standby
- Must be able to work outdoors in normal conditions, inclement weather conditions, day and night conditions and some office work as required.

Core Competencies:- Ability to keep records and make reports, perform line work, maintain working relationships with associates, subordinates, and public. Lay out, assign, and supervise the work of others; understand and follow oral and written instructions, blueprints, sketches, and staking sheets.
- Considerable knowledge of electrical theory, first aid, and C.P.R, line construction techniques and standards, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade, fiber optics, equipment and tool operation and care, National Electric Safety Code, and extensive knowledge of the operation, switching and maintenance of overhead and underground power lines.
Must live within 50 miles from the intersection of Grand Avenue and 8 th Street. Total travel time cannot exceed 60 minutes at posted driving speeds.
Education, Training &Certifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of training program through the various steps of line position or equivalent.
- Course in safety, training, supervision, gloving hot stick methods and electrical theory desirable.
- Must be State Certified Journeyman or equivalent.
- Seven (7) years’ experience in power line construction and maintenance with experience at all levels of line positions and supervisory experience.
- Must possess at least a CDL Class B, prefer CDL Class
A. - Preferred to possess two (2) to four (4) years of supervisory experience.
Physical Requirements:
While performing all the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and the risk of electrical shock. The employee is periodically exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise level environment. The employee must be able to climb poles, work from bucket trucks, enter and exit vaults/manholes.
Must be physically capable of performing CPR and pole top rescue. Must have keen visual and hearing acuity.
