Omni Underground is rapidly expanding and seeking experienced Horizontal Directional Drill Operators to help lead and grow our HDD crews across California’s Central Valley. This role is ideal for an operator who takes pride in clean, accurate bores, respects the crew, and wants long-term growth in a company that values production, safety, and leadership. As a turnkey underground utility contractor, Omni Underground performs directional drilling, potholing, trenching, vault setting, and full restoration.

Responsibilities
  • Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar)
  • Read and interpret utility prints, bore profiles, USA markings, and as-built drawings
  • Install conduit and utilities including fiber, power, gas, telecom, and joint trench
  • Coordinate daily operations with Locators, Foremen, and Ground Laborers
  • Maintain jobsite safety, cleanliness, and production standards
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and basic maintenance on HDD equipment
  • Troubleshoot bore alignment, locating conflicts, and field conditions in real time
  • Communicate effectively with project management and field leadership
  • Follow all OSHA, city, client, and company safety regulations
Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience operating horizontal directional drilling equipment
  • Strong understanding of underground utility installation (fiber, power, gas, telecom)
  • Ability to read and understand utility plans, bore profiles, and site layouts
  • Solid knowledge of utility locating practices and dig alert procedures
  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying field conditions, including occasional overtime or weekends
  • Strong communication skills and crew-first mindset

Preferred (Nice to Have):

  • Experience working around excavators, vac trucks, potholing, and trenchers
  • Leadership experience or interest in advancing into a lead or foreman role

Compensation: $29.00 - 35.00 hourly
