Location: Fort Irwin
The OSP Telecom Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing outside plant telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic and copper cable systems. This role supports aerial, underground, and buried network construction activities while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications, customer standards, and industry best practices.
Responsibilities- Install, splice, terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic and copper cable systems.
- Perform aerial and underground outside plant construction support.
- Read and interpret blueprints, splice diagrams, work prints, maps, and job specifications.
- Install and maintain handholes, pedestals, cabinets, terminals, closures, and related OSP equipment.
- Perform fiber testing using OTDR, power meters, light sources, and related test equipment.
- Identify and resolve service issues, cable faults, signal loss, and damaged infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work, test results, redlines, materials used, and field changes.
- Operate and maintain basic telecom tools, hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment.
- Follow safety standards, traffic control procedures, OSHA requirements, and company policies.
- Coordinate with supervisors, project managers, customers, inspectors, and other field crews.
- Support emergency restoration work as needed, including after-hours or weekend response.
- Ensure all work areas are left clean, safe, and compliant with customer and regulatory requirements.
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Active unexpired certification as per DoD 8570.01‑M guidelines is required: ONE of the following is required at time of hire or within 60 days of hire date:
CompTIA Security+CE, CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, or SSCP. - Previous experience in outside plant telecommunications, fiber optics, utility construction, or related field preferred.
- Knowledge of fiber optic cable installation, splicing, termination, and testing.
- Ability to read construction drawings, cable records, and network diagrams.
- Familiarity with aerial, buried, and underground telecom infrastructure.
- Ability to use OTDRs, power meters, fusion splicers, and basic telecom testing tools.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform physical labor outdoors.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and travel to job sites as needed.
- Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and communication skills.
- Fiber optic certification such as FOA CFOT or equivalent.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Bucket truck, ladder safety, or confined space training.
- Experience with utility locating, cable blowing, directional boring support, or aerial strand work.
- Experience working with telecom providers, government contracts, or commercial network projects.

Pay Range$38.00 - $40.87 per hour
