Introduction
This examination is to fill multiple vacancies in the General Services Department and to establish an eligible list that may be used to fill future vacancies. Job Location and Background CheckPositions are located at the San Joaquin County Jail facilities and are subject to a passing law enforcement background check.
Facilities PayCrafts workers located at San Joaquin County Jail are eligible to a 7.5% "Facility Pay" base salary increase.
Incentives and BonusesIncentives and bonuses may be available for eligible new hires hired and with a signed Conditional Job Offer before July 1st. Incentives and bonuses are subject to approval by Human Resources:
- Vacation Accrual Rate: San Joaquin County vacation accrual rate consistent with the candidate's total years of public service.
- Sick Leave: Candidates leaving other employment may receive credit for actual non‑reimbursable sick leave hours (up to 160 hours) from their last agency. Hours shall be subject to San Joaquin County's minimum sick leave cash out provisions.
- New Hire Retention Bonus:
- $2,000 upon completion of first year equivalent employment (2,080 hours)
- $1,000 upon completion of third year equivalent employment (6,240 hours)
- $3,000 upon completion of sixth year equivalent employment (12,480 hours)
- Perform skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, metal work, welding, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
- Pour concrete, hang doors, lay flooring, install partitions and drop ceilings; repair door closures, furniture and roofing; perform general carpentry work.
- Perform general plumbing repair; install water and gas lines, lavatories and faucets; unplug sewers and drains.
- Install and replace light fixtures, bulbs, ballasts and fuses; install conduit, electrical wiring, switches and outlets.
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on locks, appliances, automotive equipment, boilers, heating and ventilating, and related mechanical devices.
- Operate and maintain a variety of motorized tools, equipment and vehicles.
- Read, interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, or simple blueprints; forecast material needs and order supplies; maintain records; prepare reports.
- May lead other workers.
- EITHER I:
Two years of journey level experience in at least one of the building trades. - OR II
:
Four years as a Crafts Worker II in San Joaquin County Service. - Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
- Special Requirement: Two years of journey level experience in one of the following building trades may be required for assignment or continued assignment to specific departments: painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC).

AbilityLead a small group of semi-skilled or unskilled workers; prepare and work from sketches or plans for construction, renovation and maintenance of buildings and equipment; make accurate estimates of time and material required for repair and maintenance work; use tools employed in the building trades; keep records and prepare reports; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
