Utilities Maintenance Worker Trainee/I/II

The Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Utilities Maintenance Worker Trainee/I/II for the Wastewater division. Depending upon the candidates' qualifications, the vacancy will be filled at either the Utilities Maintenance Worker Trainee or Level I or Level II. The successful candidate will work at the City's Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.

  • Be part of the division responsible for inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining sanitary sewer lines, manholes, and lift stations

Primary responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair duties as it relates to the water and wastewater collection systems
  • Perform light and heavy manual labor
  • Inspect and perform maintenance on various pump and lift stations
  • Operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
  • Experience in utility or public works-related maintenance and construction work
  • The ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more
  • Pride in their personal work product; demonstrate initiative, and be safety conscious
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including excellent customer service skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with recordkeeping
  • A team player approach and motivation; affinity for new challenges
  • A valid Class C California driver's license

Requirements:

  • Trainee Level: Ability to obtain and maintain certification through the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) as a Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 within 18 months of employment. Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license with tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
  • Level I: Possession of, and ability to maintain, certification through the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) as a Water Distribution Operator Grade D1. Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license with tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
  • Level II: Possession of, and ability to maintain, certification through the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) as a Water Distribution Operator Grade D1. State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) as a Water Distribution Operator Grade D2 is preferred. A valid Class B California driver's license with tanker endorsement.

Perform after-hours emergency work on an "as needed" basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis. Must be able to respond to on-call responsibilities at the Municipal Service Center within 30 minutes.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Special Requirements:

  • Classification is part of the US Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). Pre-employment and random drug testing are requirements of the program.
  • Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license
  • In accordance with Cal/OSHA regulations, to get an airtight face seal while working with a respirator, employees in this position are required to be clean-shaven (no beards, long mustaches, long sideburns, or lengthy head hair).
