Equipment Mechanic

Compensation:
Salary Range: $41.11/hour - $55.08/hour (New employees to the District, no higher than Step 6 $ 52.47)
* Based on the 2026-27 Classified Salary Schedule Employment contingent upon background check and Post-Offer Pre-Employment Physical (POPP)

Position

Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation (MOT) and/or Designee, the Equipment Mechanic performs skilled, journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of District vehicles and equipment. This includes school buses, white fleet vehicles, vans, trucks, grounds and construction equipment, and specialized mechanical systems. The Equipment Mechanic ensures all equipment is safe, operational, and compliant with federal, state, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) regulations.

Qualifications

Journeyman-level knowledge in diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicle systems Understanding of diagnostic software, computer-based testing equipment, and electrical schematics Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and repair procedures Proficient in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, HVAC, and hydraulic systems Knowledge of CHP BIT inspection requirements and DOT safety standards Education/Experience High school diploma or equivalent Valid California Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake and passenger endorsements Minimum of three (3) years journey-level mechanic experience;

school bus/heavy-duty mechanic experience preferred Skills/Abilities Proficient in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining gasoline, diesel, electric, and specialized mechanical systems Able to use diagnostic scanners, hand tools, welding equipment, and shop machinery safely and effectively Skilled in performing preventive maintenance, completing accurate work orders, and maintaining inspection logs Capable of working independently, prioritizing tasks, and meeting established timelines Strong ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, maintain positive working relationships, and adapt to shifting priorities Knowledge Principles, operation, and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicle systems including engines, transmissions, drive trains, suspension, and brakes Electrical, fuel, cooling, lubrication, and emission systems for buses, trucks, and fleet vehicles Proper use and care of shop tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, hoists, welders, and fabrication tools CHP Motor Carrier (BIT) regulations, OSHA safety standards, EPA and hazardous materials requirements Troubleshooting methods for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions Preventive maintenance procedures and California smog/emissions testing requirements Work order systems, fleet maintenance documentation, and recordkeeping requirements

Duties & Responsibilities

Performs skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of school buses, trucks, vans, white fleet vehicles, grounds equipment, and construction equipment Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and safety inspections in compliance with CHP BIT requirements Diagnoses and repairs engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, steering systems, suspension, fuel systems, electrical systems, and HVAC systems Repairs, replaces, and adjusts mechanical components including bearings, pumps, hoses, belts, wiring, valves, filters, and related parts Uses computerized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot electrical, emission, and automotive control systems Performs welding, fabrication, and minor body repair tasks as needed Responds to road calls and provides field service during breakdowns or emergencies Maintains accurate work orders, mileage logs, inspection records, emissions testing documentation, and parts usage reports Obtains and maintains required certifications Performs other duties consistent with job description
