This role functions as a McKinney-Vento Transportation Driver. The primary responsibilities include providing transportation services for students experiencing homelessness in compliance with the McKinney-Vento Act and offering operational support for both the district's yellow school bus and white activity bus fleets.

This role is critical to removing transportation barriers to attendance, ensuring safe, consistent student transportation, and providing flexible coverage for multiple transportation needs, all while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and district regulations. The McKinney-Vento Transportation plays a key role within the district's transportation services. This position is vital to supporting transportation for students experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act. This position reports directly to the Director of Transportation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate fleet vehicles (car and mid-size SUV) safely.
  • Provide transportation for McKinney-Vento students between their home/placement and their school of origin.
  • Adhere to all North Carolina safety laws and Asheville City Schools procedures.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain safe and efficient transportation routes, adjusting as necessary in response to changes in student placement and assignments.
  • Execute emergency procedures, including evacuation, when required.
Transportation & Logistics
  • Dedicated Student Transport:
    Ensure reliable transportation for McKinney-Vento students.
  • Special Event Driving:
    Operate white fleet vehicles as assigned for extracurricular activities and special events.
  • Operational Continuity:
    Collaborate closely with dispatch to maintain continuous daily route coverage.
  • Communicate effectively using email and other district platforms.
  • Manage basic data tasks, including reporting, documentation, and data entry.
  • Utilize district transportation systems to assist with routing and compliance documentation.
Support Responsibilities
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding all student housing and personal details.
  • Foster positive and respectful relationships with students and their families.
  • Utilize a trauma-informed lens when engaging with students who are experiencing housing insecurity.
  • Act as the liaison to the following groups, providing real-time updates on schedule changes, concerns, or incidents.
    • Transportation Department
    • McKinney-Vento Coordinator
    • School administrators and staff
    • Families being served.

  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet all certification standards for NC school bus drivers.
  • Proficiency in operating a computer and utilizing transportation software (email, routing platforms, Excel, GPS, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
  • Prior experience in student transportation.
  • Experience working with at-risk or highly mobile student populations.
  • Experienced driver with 5+ years of experience.
  • Clear MVR record.
Work includes split shifts. Schedule is subject to change daily to accommodate:
  • Early mornings and afternoons
  • Student mobility under McKinney-Vento
  • Transportation needs
  • Operational or emergency requirements
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to safely drive vehicles for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and walk during inspections and daily duties.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to and exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Ability to secure wheelchairs and other mobility devices, when applicable.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergencies.
  • Must meet all DOT physical and vision/hearing requirements.
  • Position follows a school-year calendar.
  • Hours may vary based on student transportation needs, routing schedules, and activity bus assignments.
  • Ability to pass and participate in random drug screenings.
This position is designed to:
  • Improve continuity of transportation for McKinney-Vento students.
  • Support white fleet activity bus transportation. Improve communication and compliance with federal requirements.
  • Provide flexible transportation capacity across campuses and programs.
