Extra Help non-benefited position, limited to 960 hours per fiscal year)

Under general supervision, operates buses, vans and automobiles to provide scheduled, special and dial‑a‑ride transit services for the public. The operator is responsible for customer service, presenting a positive image of the transit system, assisting disabled passengers with boarding and disembarking, inspecting vehicles for safe operating conditions, and performing related duties as assigned.

Supervision

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory and management staff. No direct supervision of other staff.

Class Characteristics

This is a fully qualified journey-level classification responsible for operating transit vehicles, providing customer service, and ensuring safety. Incumbents work independently, exercise judgment and initiative within established guidelines, and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies.

Typical Job Functions
  • Operate buses, vans, and automobiles to provide scheduled, special, and dial‑a‑ride transit services.
  • Pick up and deliver passengers, assist disabled passengers with specialized equipment, and provide information and respond to patron inquiries.
  • Operate transit vehicles safely under varying weather and road conditions.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment, add fluids, adjust air, and report maintenance or repair needs.
  • Enter passenger and route information via computerized tablet or paper route sheet and manage fares.
  • Maintain communications with the dispatch center and respond to dispatcher assignments.
  • Make prompt, accurate accident and incident reports, provide first‑aid assistance as required, and contact dispatch, supervisors, or emergency services.
  • Compile data on passengers served and assist in preparing and maintaining service records and reports.
  • Keep vehicles clean and orderly, search for trash, sweep, clean windows, and use the automated washing system.
  • Respond to customer inquiries or complaints and refer to supervisors as needed.
  • Perform office support tasks and observe safe work methods and utilize safety equipment.
  • Assist other transit operators with route orientation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications – Knowledge
  • Operational characteristics of various transit vehicles and specialized accessibility devices.
  • Safe driving practices for public transit vehicles.
  • Safety regulations, Vehicle Code provisions, and ADA regulations related to public transit operations.
  • Daily vehicle safety inspection techniques and mechanical ability to check oil, refuel, and install snow chains.
  • Use of radio communication systems and computer/office software.
  • Knowledge of county road systems and basic mathematics/cash handling.
  • Basic first‑aid and safe work methods principles.
  • Effective customer service methods and internal staff communication.
  • English language structure, spelling, composition rules, and grammar.
Qualifications – Ability
  • Operate transit vehicles skillfully and safely, including use of accessibility equipment.
  • Present a positive public image of the transit system.
  • Respond decisively and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Read and interpret maps and schedules.
  • Operate basic computer and communication systems.
  • Collect and account for fares.
  • Prepare accurate and concise records and reports.
  • Maintain route schedules.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
  • Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed.
  • Understand and apply laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with appropriate grammar and syntax.
  • Follow written and oral instruction and build effective working relationships.
Education and Experience

Completion of the twelfth grade and at least six months of experience driving vehicles, preferably in a transit environment.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
  • Within ninety days of appointment, obtain a Class B California Driver’s License and a Verification Transit Training (VTT) certification with passenger endorsement.
