Supervising Airport Service Worker

Under direction, assigns, directs, and supervises the work of airport operations personnel; works alone or with other staff to perform more difficult maintenance and repairs; performs related work as required.

This is the first supervisory level in the airport service worker series, with responsibility for providing direction to a small staff of Airport Service Workers and other airport operations staff in addition to performing similar work.

This class is distinguished from Airport Operations Supervisor who has responsibility for planning activities for airport operations and assisting the Airport Manager in the overall work of the aviation division.

Maintain the airfield and report/correct problems to ensure safe operation of the airport.

Meets with airport users, contractors, other agencies, and members of the public to resolve questions and complaints relating to airport operations.

Schedules, directs, supervises, trains and reviews the work of airport operations staff including airport service workers, custodial and maintenance workers.

Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment including trucks, power and hand tools.

Provide emergency response, including aircraft rescue and fire fighting.

Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision and training.

Principles and practices related to the operation of a small airport.

Methods, tools, equipment used in the maintenance and repair of airport facilities and grounds.

Basic methods of vehicle maintenance and repair.

Federal, State and local regulations pertaining to airport operations and security. Operation and maintenance of airport fire fighting equipment.

Safety regulations and practices pertaining to the work.

Use of standard office equipment including a personal computer.

Basic business mathematics.

Assigning, supervising and reviewing the work of others.

Training others in work procedures and safety regulations.

Using initiative and sound independent judgement within established guidelines. Operating and maintaining a variety of vehicles, equipment and tools.

Maintaining and repairing airport vehicles, facilities, buildings and equipment. Responding quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

Maintaining accurate records and preparing other written materials.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must be able to obtain a FCC restricted Radio Telephone Operator license and CPR and First Aid certificates within six months of employment. Must possess strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be willing to respond to emergencies in off hours as required. May be required to obtain certification as a Weather Observer by the National Weather Service.

Must pass a Federal Aviation Administration background investigation. Desirable

Education and Experience:

One year of experience in airport operations and maintenance work at a level equivalent to the County's Airport Service Worker II class.
