Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and the functional direction of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead worker, the incumbent operates equipment including passenger vehicles, pickups, vans, 1-ton and larger trucks, construction equipment (mowers, graders, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, forklifts), snow removal equipment (plows, wings, blowers). Performs tasks related to snow removal and highway maintenance, either individually or with a crew.

In his/her absence, a Caltrans Maintenance Lead worker or other qualified person may supervise. May work for other Supervisors or work units as workload requires. Some training from other crew members will be provided. Must possess a valid Class A driver’s license with tank endorsement.

Eligibility for hire may depend on score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. New state applicants must be on the state examination list to be eligible. To apply for the exam, please search by the classification title on the Cal Careers site.

Permanent and intermittent appointments exist; a permanent, intermittent employee may work up to 1,500 hours in any 12 consecutive months. Work hours and schedule are determined by operational needs.

Working Conditions

Location:

Colusa County, 1401 Will South Green Ave., Colusa, CA 95932. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This recruitment is for the 26/27 winter season. Work may occur in extreme conditions (heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow). Normal winter schedule is 5/8-hour days; summer schedule may be 4/40 hours. Night shifts may be scheduled.

Overtime may be required for storms, emergencies, or special projects.

Special Requirements
  • The position requires a valid California Driver’s License (CDL). Provide CDL number, class, expiration date, endorsements, and restrictions on the application.
  • A drug screen and a background investigation are required prior to hire.
  • Some positions require a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver's license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement. Knowledge of CDL rules for highway maintenance is preferred.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of highway maintenance methods, equipment, and tools; familiarity with the California Vehicle Code for loading/operating motor vehicles; and highway maintenance regulations. Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver license with tank endorsement; hazardous materials endorsement is highly desirable. Ability to work safely around high-density traffic and to work effectively alone or with others.
