Solid Waste Operator

Position: Solid Waste Operator I
SUMMARY:

This is a working position for the city in the solid waste division, overseeing the collection, transportation, and dumping of waste materials such as yard debris, vegetation, tree limbs, and other materials. Work is performed under the general direction of the Solid Waste Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• Operates knuckle boom loader to load truck with yard debris or other waste material.
• Operates backhoe, trencher, and tractor to excavate, spread and level earth.
• Operates front-end loader to load trucks.
• Operates street sweeping equipment both mechanical and regenerative.
• Drives dump trucks to transport, dump, and spread material.
• Keeps accurate logs of materials loaded and transported.
• Performs operator's maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

• Knowledge of current techniques and procedures used in modern heavy equipment construction operations.
• Knowledge of State regulated traffic control devices.
• Ability to safely operate a knuckle boom loader, dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, and tractor.
• Ability to recognize hazardous material.
• Ability to work under general supervision.
• Ability to read, write, and understand English.
• Ability to do simple math calculations.
• Ability to carry out oral or written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum three (3) years' experience in various fields of maintenance and construction type work.
• Valid State of Florida CDL, Class B with air brakes is required.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
