We are seeking an initiative-taking, knowledgeable, and hands-on Environmental Health & Safety Director to lead and manage all aspects of our safety program for Calumet City Plumbing (CCP) located in the southern suburb of Chicago, situated on the Illinois-Indiana border.
The Environmental Health & Safety Director will be responsible for ensuring a culture of safety compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement across all job sites and within the company. This position is 65% field-based
, requiring frequent visits to local job sites to conduct inspections, training, and audits, and 35% office-based to handle planning, reporting, compliance documentation, and program development.
Field-Based (65%):
- Conducts regular job site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.
- Trains employees in-house for various certifications.
- Identifies potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Leads safety meetings and toolbox talks at job sites.
- Provide on-the-spot training, coaching, and guidance to crews.
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and injuries; document findings and implement prevention strategies.
- Partners with supervisors and crew leads to reinforcing safety protocols and safe work behaviors.
- Ensures proper use and availability of PPE and safety equipment in the field.
Office-Based (35%):
- Develops, implements, and maintains the company's safety program, policies, and procedures.
- Maintains all safety documentation, including OSHA logs, Safety Data Sheets, inspection reports, and training records.
- Coordinates and schedules required safety training and certifications for employees.
- Manages accident investigations, reports and ensures corrective actions are in place.
- Stay current with OSHA regulations and industry safety best practices.
- Prepare monthly safety reports for leadership review.
- Partners with Human Resource Director to co-manage recordkeeping, training, license renewals, and 3rd party auditors’ safety compliance companies and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, construction or related field is highly preferred.
- 5+ years of extensive safety experience in construction, plumbing, mechanical, or related industries.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety regulations.
- Safety certifications required. (EPA, DOT, OSHA).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build rapport with field staff and earn trust while enforcing safety standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety reporting tools.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for daily field visits.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment without direct supervision.
- Willing to work after hours as needed to service CCPs customers 24/7.
- Frequent travel to job sites within Indiana and Illinois.
- Exposure to construction and plumbing site conditions include varying weather and terrain.
- Ability to lift equipment or materials up to 50 lbs.
- Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time.
- Standard office environment for administrative work.
