Position: Instructor in Film and Media Studies (Part Time Pool)

Overview

This applicant pool will be used to fill part-time Instructor in Film and Media Studies vacancies at Ventura College for the Spring 2026 semester. If you have applied to previous pools in this discipline, you will need to reapply to this pool to be considered.

What You'll Do

Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor (Non-Contact/Temporary) provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds for the purpose of facilitating the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives. In accordance with Education Code sections 87482.5, Instructors (Non-Contract/Temporary) may be employed up to 67% of a full-time assignment.

Ventura College, established in 1925, is one of the first community colleges in California with an enrollment around 14,500 students. The campus is located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara on a 112-acre site with views of the Channel Islands.

Representative Duties
  • Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking through assignments and activities in various instructional settings.
  • Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study and lifelong learning resources; refer students to support services as appropriate.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes; provide timely feedback in class, online, or during office hours.
  • Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes; implement objectives listed on the official course outline of record.
  • Maintain current records of enrollment, attendance, progress, course curriculum, and outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate and select instructional materials in collaboration with discipline faculty; order materials to ensure timely delivery.
  • Revise and update course content in response to new theory, application, and industry developments; update syllabi and assess measurable outcomes with faculty.
  • Participate in curriculum and program development; may provide input into student learning outcomes; may attend committees and meetings at various levels.
  • May provide work direction to others and perform related duties as assigned.

Note: E stands for Essential Duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

  • Master’s degree in Film/Cinema and Media Studies, Film, Television and Media Studies, Drama/Theater, Mass Communication OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s degree in Visual Studies, Media Studies, English, or Communication OR
  • Equivalent qualifications as determined by the District (see “Equivalency” section); or possession of a valid California Community College Teaching Credential appropriate to the discipline.
