Skills Required

Primary (Must-Have)

  • Minimum 3 years of related machining experience
    .
  • Ability to set up and operate multiple production machines.
  • Experience operating conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, specifications, planning sheets, route sheets, and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to independently perform machine setups.
  • Knowledge of machining operations including cutting, shaping, deburring, forming, drilling, and reaming.
  • Ability to install and adjust cutting tools based on material type and machining requirements.
  • Ability to adjust machine feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to produce quality parts.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments including gages, calipers, micrometers, and comparators.
  • Ability to use magnification equipment, including microscopes, for inspection of precision parts.
  • Working knowledge of machine shop mathematics, which may include trigonometry.
  • Ability to work with limited guidance in a team environment.
  • Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Ability to effectively apply Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow company safety policies and maintain a clean and orderly work area.

Secondary (Good to Have)

  • Experience interpreting reports and using job-specific software applications.
  • Familiarity with employee self-service systems and specialized automated systems such as PMR, TORS, and mail.
  • Experience identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing Lean concepts.

Position Overview

The Machinist Senior is responsible for operating various conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers on semi-complex jobs. The role involves working from blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, verbal instructions, and engineering, tooling, or equipment information to produce quality machined components.

The ideal candidate will have strong machining and machine setup experience, the ability to work with limited guidance, and a solid understanding of machining processes, precision inspection, SPC, and Lean Manufacturing principles.

Machining & Machine Setup

  • Set up and operate multiple production machines.
  • Perform machining operations including cutting, shaping, deburring, forming, drilling, and reaming.
  • Perform machine operations using preplanned and established materials, tooling, and sequences.
  • Make necessary machine adjustments and report improper machine functioning or cutting action for correction.
  • Align and fasten work using standard fixtures and established methods.
  • Install and adjust cutting tools consistent with the type and size of material being machined.
  • Follow established manufacturing methods using standard production machines, materials, and tooling.
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to machine quality parts according to documentation.
  • Operate hand and power tools to deburr precision and complex machine parts in accordance with engineering blueprints and route sheets.

Quality Inspection

  • Inspect parts for conformance to specifications using gages, calipers, micrometers, comparators, and other measuring instruments.
  • Use various magnification equipment, including microscopes, to detect and avoid damage to surfaces and critical areas.
  • Visually inspect parts for burrs, damaged surfaces, and other quality issues.
  • Perform Statistical Process Control (SPC) activities accurately and regularly according to division requirements.
  • Maintain high standards for quality and precision throughout the machining process.

Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement

  • Actively implement Lean initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs.
  • Identify and provide suggestions for areas of improvement.
  • Effectively apply Lean concepts and tools within the work area.
