Job Profile

There is an immediate opening for the position of Supervisor of Recreation - Aquatics within the Recreation & Culture Division of the Community Services Department. The Supervisor of Recreation - Aquatics provides leadership and oversight to ensure the safe and efficient operation of city aquatic facilities, associated buildings and aquatic features. The supervisor is responsible for stand-by duties within the Recreation and Culture Department, as scheduled.

What you will be doing

  • Responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of aquatic programs working collaboratively with other departments (Service Cambridge, Emergency Management, Risk/Legal, etc.), to ensure smooth operations.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of new and existing standard operating procedures and is responsible for program quality control.
  • Assures compliance and documentation as applicable to regulations and standard operating procedures. Takes leading role in development, training and implementation of new and existing standard operating procedures and is responsible for quality control.
  • Provides input to the departmental budget process and is responsible for assigned cost centers, forecasting and controlling expenditures in areas under direct control.
  • Develops business cases with supporting justification to advance strategic initiates such as staff shortages, grant opportunities, customer-friendly registration/administrative processes; initiate business practice reviews to identify efficiencies and prepare recommendations for Recreation Leadership Team.
  • Supervises, trains, coaches and evaluates all unionized, non-union, contract, and part-time staff, as well as volunteers within the portfolio. Provides leadership/direction to staff/volunteers to achieve effective/efficient operations for the area.
  • Is a key participant in the recruitment of staff to support the programs and services within the portfolio.
  • Responsible for staff supervision, scheduling, discipline, evaluating and responding to grievances.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the collective bargaining agreement and a working knowledge of the collective bargaining process.
  • Responsible for the general cleanliness of the centers in conjunction with the Facilities Department, for which programming occurs. Responsible for reporting facility maintenance issues and liaising with appropriate contractors.
  • Ensures employees and contractors work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations, and Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, and to take every reasonable precaution to protect the workers.
  • Consistently models the corporate core values and behaviours – integrity, respect, inclusiveness and service.
  • Education

  • 2 year post-secondary diploma in Recreation or related field.

  • Certified in First Aid, CPR, AED along with Principles of Healthy Child Development, and Quest 2. 

  • Certified in National Lifeguard – Pool Option, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, Aquatic supervisor and examiner mentor

  • Pool Operator Level 1 certification

  • Experience and Knowledge

  • 3-4 years of relevant supervisory experience in the recreation sector relating to community groups and/or recreation programming

  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, and regulations. 

  • Staff management including union, non-union and contractors.

    Current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.
