Position Overview
The Harvard Art Museums is seeking a highly organized, temporary assistant to support the collections of the Division of European and American Art for 13 weeks. The assistant will report to the division’s Curator of the Collection.
Responsibilities- Organize and implement administrative systems and procedures; maintain files and an orderly office environment.
- Compose, proofread, edit, and prepare correspondence, reports and other materials using word processing, spreadsheets and/or databases.
- Respond to inquiries and compose correspondence related to the collection.
- Work closely with the Curator of the Collection to catalogue new acquisitions in the collections database.
- Update curatorial records in the collections database and physical object files.
- Approve external image requests for artworks in the Division of European and American Art collection.
- Coordinate Division photography requests.
- Help organize museum gallery installations, including making lists, cataloguing works of art, coordinating logistics, and liaising with colleagues in other departments.
- Assist with scheduling and facilitating curatorial file appointments.
- Schedule and compile lists for Art Study Center appointments for staff and external requests.
- Assist with coordination of public and private programs and serve as on-site support during events.
- Support divisional staff in a wide variety of assigned project‑based work associated with divisional exhibitions, publications, lectures, and special projects.
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years of related administrative support experience. Education may count toward experience.
Additional Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred. Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and adaptability essential. Ability to multi‑task and maintain a positive, helpful attitude. Interest in museums, art, and art history helpful. Proficiency in relevant software applications (e.g., MS Office). Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) helpful. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of a European language helpful but not required.
This is a non‑benefitted, hourly position with a wage of $25–30 per hour, depending on experience.
