Job Description & How to Apply Below

About This Role

The Senior Director, External Growth & Innovation will drive commercial innovations that create value for our business, patient communities and customers. This key leader will conceptualize, develop, gain organizational buy-in and implement new technologies - and help build advanced capabilities - for our therapeutic areas in collaboration with the North American Leadership. The role requires partnering across the commercial organization and navigating constructive debate, building trust, and creating alignment, all while remaining grounded in market dynamics.

You are part of a small, agile team in a role that reports to the Vice President, Head of External Growth & Innovation.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop a deep understanding of Biogen’s commercial strategy and growth drivers.
  • Leverage your commercial expertise to identify bold ideas, opportunities and new capabilities that keep Biogen at the forefront of our therapeutic areas.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive innovation strategy that aligns with Biogen’s mission, values, and business objectives and gain support across marketing, medical affairs, operations, legal, compliance and leadership.
  • Identify, evaluate, and help scale AI-enabled solutions that our stakeholders can use to shorten the path from symptoms to diagnosis.
  • Partner across functions to re-architect how work gets done - applying AI, process redesign, and new operating models - to sustain our growth and help automate support teams.
  • Lead the implementation of new technologies and collaborations by helping franchises and functions assess, test, and scale new technologies and capabilities.
  • Build measurement methodologies that track return on investment and annualized run-rate value and make the case to scale high-return solutions across therapeutic areas.
  • Consistently scan and engage external stakeholders including technology companies, new models of care delivery and ecosystem catalysts to identify the highest-potential opportunities that will accelerate growth, forge new markets or address barriers in our therapeutic areas.
  • Build relationships with innovators, emerging companies and other potential partners to create a strong network.
Who You Are

You are a strategic executive with strong business acumen, focused on making an impact on patient communities and the growth of our organization. You work well in ambiguity and have a track-record of leading without authority to gain cross functional support. You have in-depth experience in the U.S. healthcare market – ideally with an understanding of commercial organizations in biotech or pharma – and are fluent in the patient, healthcare provider and payer dynamics, which you leverage to assess and implement opportunities that scale.

You have executive presence to advocate for your ideas. You are fluent in how AI, data platforms, and evolving access dynamics are reshaping commercial execution, and you can identify genuine, value-generating opportunities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree, MBA preferred
  • 12+ years of progressive healthcare/pharmaceutical/biotech experience and/or healthcare consulting experience preferred
  • Breadth of experiences across healthcare commercial disciplines (e.g., marketing, market access, strategy, business development, management consulting) are an advantage
  • Experience and deep understanding of healthcare ecosystems
  • Ability to drive and lead through change and ambiguity
  • Proven ability to project manage complex and innovative programs cross-functionally and with external partners
  • Ideally, working knowledge of AI/ML applications in healthcare, EHR ecosystems, and/or digital health tools, with the judgment to assess technical feasibility and commercial impact.
  • Familiarity with U.S. access and reimbursement dynamics affecting patient access.
  • Experience designing and scaling operating model and process improvements with demonstrable ROI and measurable business outcomes; able to clearly articulate the impact of those initiatives beyond tool deployment.

Up to 5% travel expected.
