  • July 6 - 17, 2026
  • July 20 - 31, 2026
  • August 3 - 14, 2026

We will have a three-day training period for coaches from June 31 - July 2, 2026.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The NuVu Summer Coach position is a temporary, independent contractor position. NuVu summer coaches have interests in design, technology, and education. Coaches are responsible for envisioning and teaching studios where they brainstorm, design, and create with the students. The coach will teach for either 1, 2, or 3 sessions of the summer program in their field of expertise.

NuVu Coaches come from a range of backgrounds and bring a diversity of expertise. Past NuVu Coaches have included Masters and PhD students from MIT, Harvard, and RISD, entrepreneurs who have their own companies, artists who work around the world, professionals developing innovative products in various fields, architecture and engineering graduate students, industrial designers, filmmakers, and video game designers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Bring unique expertise in specific areas to broaden students’ exposure to the arts, technology science, and other fields of study
  • Teach a 2-week studio on a topic that fits your expertise
  • Teach fundamental design and technical skills related to your expertise
  • Work with NuVuX curriculum and adapt and/or develop new content as needed which may include preparing lectures, presentations, activities, outings and discussions
  • Give critical feedback to students about their ideas, prototypes, and design process, while allowing and empowering students to make decisions on their own
  • Guide students in developing and realizing projects of varying degrees of complexity
  • Support student teams in designing and building prototypes of their projects.
  • Be on site from 8:30am - 4:30pm each day
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL COACHES
  • A clear understanding of the design & making process: brainstorming, ideating, and prototyping.
  • Experience in giving constructive feedback to students on their ideas, prototypes, and design process for their projects
  • Have at least 1 year of design teaching experience or have taken college-level design classes
  • Recommended to have experience with teaching and managing a young age group (11-13, and 14-18)
  • Current undergraduate, graduate or PhD student, professional, entrepreneur, technologist, engineer, roboticist, architect, designer or some combination of these
  • Expert mentor
Architecture Coach Should be able to:
  • Teach spatial design thinking and concept development
  • Guide students in physical model making + prototyping
  • Use basic 3D modeling tools (Rhino)
  • Support storytelling through space and user experience
Nice to have:
  • Experience with small-scale builds (e.g., installations, tiny structures)
  • Interest in sustainability or real-world applications
Robotics / Engineering Coach (Robotics / Mechanical Systems) Should be able to:
  • Teach hands-on prototyping and fabrication (laser cutting, 3D printing, basic shop tools)
  • Work with Arduino, sensors, and actuators (motors, servos, LEDs, speakers)
  • Guide students in building mechanical systems (movement, structures, simple mechanisms)
  • Support iterative testing and troubleshooting
Nice to have:
  • Experience with robotics projects (battle bots, rovers, launchers)
  • Background in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Comfort with messy, fast-paced builds
Industrial Design / Product Design Coach Should be able to:
  • Guide physical prototyping + digital fabrication (laser cutting and 3D printing)
  • Teach Arduino + sensor-based interaction
  • Support form, usability, and user-centered design
  • Help students develop and present product concepts
Nice to have:
  • Experience with pitching / storytelling through an entrepreneurial lens
Game Design Coach Should be able to:
  • Teach how to design game mechanics, rules, and player experience
  • Guide students in creating low-tech games (board/card/physical) and/or simple digital games
  • Teach rapid prototyping and play testing
Media Art / Creative Technology Coach Should be able to:
  • Background in creative coding (p5.js / Processing) for digital media exploration
  • Teach digital + physical art-making
  • Work with Arduino / motors / simple electronics in artistic contexts
  • Guide students in creating interactive or kinetic artworks
  • Support strong conceptual + visual development
Fashion Design / Wearable Tech Coach Should be able to:
  • Teach sewing, garment construction, and textile basics
  • Guide students in concept-driven fashion design
  • Support prototyping and presentation of wearable pieces
Nice to have:
  • Experience with wearable tech (LEDs, sensors, interactive elements)
  • Experience with laser cutting for textiles
BENEFITS
  • Pay depending on experience ranging from $25.00 - $42.50 an hour
  • Paid for a three day training period, June 31 - July
    2. Coaches must be available to attend this training period.
