Part-Time Position
Longy School of Music of Bard College prepares graduate and undergraduate students to make a difference in the world through their artistry. Longy students work closely with our faculty to create bold projects that challenge the status quo and give them the opportunity to explore their interests. Our curriculum prioritizes real-world experience that empowers students to build vibrant careers in music and effect change in their communities.
The Longy School of Music of Bard College is seeking applications to fill a part-time faculty position in Alexander Technique. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience teaching the Alexander Technique, particularly in the context of performing arts training. This faculty member will work with students across disciplines-including instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers-to support healthy posture, movement, breath, and body awareness in performance.
The course meets once a week of an hour and a half.
Job Responsibilities
* Teach a course in the Alexander Technique for 6-14 students a semester
* Design and implement a curriculum that supports students' physical well-being, performance sustainability, and body-mind coordination
* Provide mentorship and support to students navigating performance-related physical tension, pain, or injury
* Work with department chair to create challenging courses tailored to the needs of Longy students
* Create and distribute well-organized, thoughtful syllabi for all courses
* As appropriate, incorporate elements of the Longy mission into course delivery
* Evaluate and grade the performance of your classroom students, according to the grading standards of the Longy Conservatory
* Provide ongoing assessment of student progress and development and take steps to accommodate the needs of students with individual learning styles
* Participate in large school events including new student orientation, commencement, full faculty meetings, and departmental meetings as needed
* Enthusiastically take steps to raise the profile of the Longy conservatory
Qualifications
* Certification from a recognized Alexander Technique training program (e.g., AmSAT, STAT, or equivalent).
* Demonstrated experience teaching the Alexander Technique, preferably within a conservatory or performing arts setting.
* Strong understanding of performance-related body mechanics and musicians' physical challenges.
* Ability to work with students from a variety of musical and performance backgrounds.
* Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
