Job Overview
Upper School English Teacher – Part‑Time (80%) – Cambridge, MA.
Responsible for teaching two sections of English 9, one AP English Literature elective, and two trimester‑long English 12 electives from October 2026 to January 2027 to cover a leave of absence. The role emphasizes student voice and agency, uses varied pedagogical approaches, and collaborates on curriculum development.
Key Responsibilities- Plans and develops an engaging, age‑appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and curriculum guidelines.
- Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluates, corrects, and grades student performance.
- Supervises the behavior of students in the classroom, school grounds, and educational trips and discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise.
- Communicates progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or campus Director.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
- Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
- Monitors halls, study periods, and lunchrooms with other faculty and staff.
- Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in‑service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.
- Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Hold an undergraduate degree in literature or a related field. An advanced degree in literature, education, or a similar field is preferred.
- Create a dynamic and engaging classroom experience for students.
- Offer a wide range of opportunities for learning in the classroom (small group work, full‑class discussion, debates, presentations, etc.).
- Demonstrate agility in adjusting teaching approaches to best support the critical thinking, writing, and creativity of all students.
- Build students’ confidence in their independent ability to read, write, and think critically and creatively.
- Work effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
- Seek collaboration with a team of colleagues within the English Department and with teachers in other disciplines.
- Value advancing students’ knowledge and affirmation of themselves and others.
- Integrate our School’s mission, values, and DEIG commitments into their teaching practices.
- Commit to working in and fostering an inclusive community by advancing the efforts of anti‑racism and equity in their classes and the broader community.
Salary range: $69,500.00 – $ (pro‑rated for leave time). The starting salary is based on experience within salary bands (0‑30 years).
