Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School (MLK) is an innovative public school where every student learns Mandarin Chinese. The school offers a sequential Two‑Way Immersion program focused on biliteracy in English & Mandarin, or a blended model balancing daily Chinese lessons with other core subjects. For grades JK–2, classrooms follow two learning strands that merge for combined English and Chinese instruction in grades 3–5.
The extended 8‑hour day provides opportunities for enrichment, deeper core subject study, and flexible pacing to meet student needs.
The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of support services to students in Cambridge Public Schools, ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and advanced learning needs.
The Special Educator will provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in both general education and separate special education settings. The role collaborates with general education, special education, and related services staff to ensure students with disabilities achieve positive educational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct special education services to students with disabilities
- Offer explicit instruction and/or support in reading/literacy, math, written language, and social‑emotional behavior
- Progress‑monitor student mastery of IEP goals and objectives using various assessments and data‑collection tools
- Develop Individualized Education Programs based on the student’s present levels of functioning and performance data
- Instruction using systematic, structured, and multisensory approaches
- Collaborate with general education, special education, and related services staff
- Administer formal and informal assessments and analyze data to inform IEP decisions regarding goals, content, and supports
- Accommodate and modify instruction for student learning and support the general education teacher in implementing accommodations
- Perform related duties as directed by the Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Director, or Coordinator of OSS for mild/moderate special needs
- Broad knowledge and experience of programs and services for students with various eligibility areas (autism, academic, behavior, learning, etc.)
- Above‑average collaboration skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and support parents and families
- Strong problem‑solving ability
