About the School and Program:
Fletcher Maynard Academy is an inclusive, student‑centered elementary school serving PreK–Grade 5 in Cambridge. The Office of Student Services provides equitable support to students with disabilities or advanced learning needs. The SCALE program (Social, Communication, Academic, and Life Skills Education) offers eleven‑month specialized instruction for scholars on the autism spectrum and other disabilities across elementary, middle, high school, and post‑graduate levels.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide direct special education services to students with disabilities.
- Deliver explicit instruction in reading/literacy, math, written language, and social‑emotional behavior.
- Progress‑monitor student mastery of IEP goals using assessments and data‑collection tools.
- Develop Individualized Education Programs based on functional assessments.
- Implement systematic, structured, multisensory teaching approaches.
- Collaborate with general‑education, special‑education, and related‑services staff.
- Administer formal and informal assessments and analyze data to guide IEP decisions.
- Accommodate and modify instruction and support general‑education teachers with accommodations.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Assistant Superintendent, Special‑Education Director, or Coordinator of the Office of Student Services.
- Broad knowledge of programs and services for students with autism, academic, behavioral, and learning disabilities.
- Strong collaboration skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Capacity to collaborate with and support parents and families.
- Problem‑solving ability.
- Understanding of inclusive educational practices, including co‑teaching approaches.
- Knowledge of formal and informal assessments for monitoring progress.
- Understanding of state and federal special‑education guidelines and requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (required); master’s preferred; concentration in learning disabilities a plus.
- Massachusetts certification to teach students with moderate or severe special needs (required).
- Experience teaching or student‑teaching in urban environments.
- Specialized training or certification in a foundational reading program such as Orton‑Gillingham or Wilson Reading.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
