Job Description

Martin Luther King, Jr. School (MLK) is an innovative public school dedicated to academic excellence and comprehensive student development. For Grades JK–2, classrooms follow distinct language learning strands, which merge together for shared instruction in Grades 3–5. Our programs prepare, enrich, and challenge our students for success as global citizens and scholars. Students benefit from an expanded learning day (8 hours), providing opportunities for increased enrichment and more time on core subjects.

This extended day offers teachers flexibility to set the pace and intensity of learning based on student needs and interests, while enabling enhanced enrichment that captures students’ curiosity.

Role

We are seeking a talented Kindergarten Grade Teacher to teach all skills and concepts in the Kindergarten grade Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. The teacher will implement differentiated, innovative instruction for a diverse group of learners, participate in on‑going professional development with colleagues in the literacy workshop model, the Math in Focus program, and Responsive Classroom. The teacher will work closely and cooperatively with grade‑level, K–2 cluster, and whole‑school teams of faculty, including special educators, ESL educators, instructional coaches, and paraprofessional aides.

Assessment strategies including district‑wide exams and formative assessment will inform and modify instruction and target intervention and enrichment needs.

The teacher will recognize the importance of integrating social learning into the classroom, fostering a safe, caring, and active learning community based on Responsive Classroom social curriculum principles. The teacher will partner with families, include them in students’ learning and development, and build on established partnerships with surrounding community institutions and organizations. The teacher will respect the multi‑leveled diversity of our school community and ensure that all students’ identities and cultures are part of the curriculum and daily life.

The teacher must be fully committed to continuous learning, improvement, reflection, and collaboration to help all students achieve at high levels.

Chinese‑English World Language Immersion Program

Designed for both native Chinese speakers and native English speakers, this program develops speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in both languages while realizing academic potential in all subjects.

Skill Set
  • Experience in Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program is strongly preferred
  • Awareness of developmental needs of kindergarten–aged learners and strategies to meet those needs through curriculum
  • Successful experience working in a multicultural environment with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio–economic backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with diverse staff and student body
  • Commitment to equity in education and belief that all students can excel
  • Fluent in Mandarin (Chinese preferred)
  • Massachusetts certification in Early Childhood (PreK–2) required
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
    Master’s preferred
