Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School (MLK) is an innovative public school dedicated to academic excellence and comprehensive student development. For Grades JK–2, classrooms follow distinct language learning strands that merge together for shared instruction in Grades 3–5.
Our programs prepare, enrich, and challenge students for success as global citizens and scholars. Students benefit from an expanded learning day of eight hours, providing opportunities for increased enrichment and more time on core subject areas. This extended day offers teachers the flexibility to set pace and intensity of learning based on student needs and interests while enabling enhanced enrichment that captures curiosity.
The King School seeks an experienced 5th‑grade teacher to join our caring and innovative community. The successful candidate will have experience planning, implementing, and adapting curriculum based on the Massachusetts State Frameworks and/or the Common Core. The teacher will set high expectations for all students and utilize scaffolding and differentiation to support learning. An appreciation of the unique developmental needs of young people in this age band, a collegial spirit, and a commitment to continual growth are essential.
Applicants with training in culturally responsive instruction are highly preferred. All candidates must be open to engaging in conversations about the intersection of race and education.
- The teacher will teach all elementary subjects.
- The teacher will implement the Wayfinder SEL model.
- The teacher will collaborate closely with other 5th‑grade teachers.
- The teacher will collaborate with all team members, including the 5th‑grade team, special educators, instructional coaches, paraprofessionals, interventionists, and other support personnel.
- Incorporate a variety of assessment strategies, including district‑wide exams and formative assessment, to inform instruction and target intervention and enrichment needs.
- Integrate social‑emotional learning into the classroom to foster a safe, caring, and active learning community.
- Partner with families and include them in the students’ learning and development.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Massachusetts State Elementary 1‑6 teacher certification and SEI Endorsement.
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- At least one year of full‑time classroom instruction.
- A strong work ethic, alongside a commitment to doing whatever it takes for students to find joy, belonging, challenge, and growth each day.
- Experience and practice working with children at the 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade level.
- Demonstrated success in elevating the achievement levels of a diverse student body.
- Strong classroom management skills.
