Teacher – Special Educator
SchoolMartin Luther King, Jr. School (MLK) – innovative public school in Cambridge Public Schools providing Mandarin Chinese instruction and a two‑way immersion program. The school offers an extended 8‑hour day to support enrichment and core subject instruction.
OfficeOffice of Student Services (OSS). Supports students with disabilities and advanced learning needs across the district.
OpportunityThe Special Educator will deliver specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in both general and special education settings, collaborating with related services staff to promote positive educational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct special education services to students with disabilities.
- Offer explicit instruction in reading/literacy, math, written language, and social‑emotional behavior.
- Progress‑monitor student mastery of IEP goals using assessments and data‑collection tools.
- Develop Individualized Education Programs based on data and student present levels.
- Use systematic, structured, and multisensory approaches to instruction.
- Collaborate with general‑education, special‑education, and related service staff.
- Administer formal and informal assessments; analyze data to inform IEP decisions.
- Accommodate and modify learning for students; support general‑education teachers with accommodations.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Director, or OSS coordinator for mild/moderate special needs.
- Broad knowledge of programs/services for students in areas of eligibility (autism, academic, behavior, learning, etc.).
- Strong collaboration skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Ability to collaborate and support parents and families.
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Understanding of inclusive educational practices, including co‑teaching approaches.
- Familiarity with formal and informal assessments for monitoring student progress.
- Knowledge of state and federal special education guidelines and requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required;
Master’s preferred; concentration in learning disabilities preferred. - Massachusetts certification for students with mild/moderate or severe special needs required.
- Experience teaching or student‑teaching in urban environments.
- Specialized training/certification in a foundational reading program such as Orton‑Gillingham or Wilson Reading.
