Job SummaryThe Academic Partnerships department manages the integration of the Peabody Museum into the University curriculum. It is responsible for articulating the ethical stewardship mission and vision of the Museum and its activities to Harvard faculty and students. Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Partnerships, the Academic Engagement Coordinator performs a teaching and research support role for the Academic Partnerships Department.
Job‑SpecificResponsibilities
- Responsible for creating and delivering lesson plans on museum practice, history, and collections for University‑level courses.
- Compiles information and resources pertaining to collections and museum history.
- Serves as an initial source of specialized information for faculty and students, requiring specialized knowledge of the collections and museum practice. Responds to inquiries.
- Advises and facilitates faculty, staff, students, colleagues, and others in the use or handling of the collection and teaching‑with‑objects techniques, supporting research use of museum collections.
- Collaborates in developing partnerships with Harvard faculty, students, departments, and schools to utilize the Museum’s collections and resources in teaching and research.
- Accomplishes most tasks independently under general supervision, keeping the supervisor informed of progress and problems.
- Utilizes collections management database to create or maintain records.
- May oversee workflow, schedule, and train other support staff, students, interns, casual employees, and volunteers.
- Assists in planning for growth and development of the Academic Partnerships department and assists in developing goals and policies.
- Performs other duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
BA in Anthropology, Archaeology, Material Culture, Museum Studies, Education (focus on post‑secondary), Art History or related field/experience.
Additional
Qualifications and Skills:
Master's degree preferred. Four or more years of related experience required with broad knowledge of curatorial methods and techniques. Familiarity with collection specialization, handling, storage, and preservation. Knowledge of computer applications and literature relating to museum collections desirable. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal skills, writing ability, and the ability to set/adjust priorities and manage multiple tasks.
Team leadership and customer service skills.

The Peabody Museum is situated on the ancestral and traditional land of the Massachusett people. It cares for over 1.2 million items from across the world, including cultural, archaeological, and osteological collections as well as extensive photographic and archival materials.
