Position: Title of Opportunity: Youth Coordinator

First Parish in Cambridge, Unitarian Universalist

Religious Exploration Youth Coordinator

Approximately 35 hours per month.

We are seeking an engaging and compassionate Religious Exploration Youth Coordinator to lead our middle and high school youth programs and help foster meaningful connection, spiritual growth, and community among our young people.

The Youth Coordinator will work with two age groups—middle school and high school youth—through classes, service projects, community engagement, field trips, and outdoor activities. Over the next several years, programming may include Neighboring Faiths/Building Bridges, OWL, Coming of Age, and general youth group gatherings.

Junior Youth Group (Grades 7–9)

Our Junior Youth Group is a cohort of approximately ten youth who will participate in the Neighboring Faiths (Building Bridges/Crossing Paths) curriculum. This program explores a variety of spiritual traditions and religions through discussion, learning, and direct experience whenever possible. Traditions studied may include Buddhism, Judaism, Quakerism, Episcopalianism, Hinduism, and others. The group will generally meet weekly, including:

  • Three Sunday morning class sessions per month
  • One visit per month to another faith community or organization
The Coordinator Will
  • Develop lesson plans and facilitate discussions
  • Arrange visits and coordinate logistics
  • Support thoughtful engagement with spiritual practices and traditions

Resources, including Soul Matters curriculum materials, will be provided. Classes will typically meet Sundays from 10:20 am –11:45 am, unless an off‑site visit requires a different schedule.

Senior Youth Group (Grades 11–12)

Our Senior Youth Group, composed of youth who recently completed the Coming of Age program, will meet monthly, likely in the evening, to maintain community and continue their shared growth and connection.

The Coordinator Will Also
  • Communicate regularly with parents and families
  • Track attendance
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteer assistants from an existing volunteer pool
  • Meet briefly with other teachers and staff after Sunday classes
  • Welcome new families into the program
  • Submit lesson updates for the weekly church newsletter
Qualifications

We are seeking a warm, organized, and confident leader who connects well with preteens and teens and can thoughtfully support a range of individual needs and personalities.

Preferred Qualifications Include
  • Experience teaching or working with youth
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Interest in philosophy, religion, and spiritual exploration
  • Familiarity with Unitarian Universalist values, or enthusiasm for learning about them
  • Comfort organizing events, trips, and group activities
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills
Time Commitment
  • Sunday programming for the Neighboring Faiths group: 9:30 am – 1:30 pm
  • Senior youth programming:
    One evening per month
  • Flexible administrative, communication and planning time throughout the week
  • Total commitment averages approximately 35 hours per month.
Compensation

Compensation is $200 per class taught, which includes preparation, planning, coordination, and class facilitation time (approximately 7 hours total per class).
