Job Description

Job Summary

This position works with studio and film classes. This position is responsible for training, organizing the tools and setting the tone for wood and metal shop use. While the wood and metal shops are essential steps for all students working in the arts, the wood and metal shops is also used by artist faculty, visiting artists, staff and the exhibition crew.

This position not only provides training but must also ensure the safety of our students while inspiring confidence and competence. This position consults, offers guidance, and help with classwork, project, and design for students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, TA/TFs, and staff, and is responsible for the onsite safety of a large part of the department.

This position maintains records and ensures individual documentation is up to date. This position hires, trains and supervises all monitors. This position is responsible for the general safety of the wood and metal shop.

This is a full-time, 10-month a year position. This position is responsible for maintaining the quality control required to ensure safety for all users.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
  • Hires, manages, and trains 5 – 8 LHT employees. Creates work schedules for LHT employees. Prepares daily lists of tasks for the LHT employees to complete.
  • Develops equipment and process training for staff, faculty, TA/TFs, and students (undergraduate and graduate students). Regularly updates training to stay current with best practice and safety regulations and recommendations. Conducts training for staff, faculty, TA/TFs, and students. Trains LHT employees to conduct tool and process trainings for staff, faculty, TA/TFs, and students.
  • Assists students (undergraduate and graduate) on classwork, research, and thesis work. Assists faculty and TA/TFs with class projects (ordering materials, discussing class assignments, class demonstrations and trainings, etc.)
  • Maintains, repairs, and updates over 25 pieces of stationary wood and metal working equipment.
  • Maintains budget for the woodshop and metal shop. Ordering materials, consumables, services, and equipment for classes and the wood/metal shop. Prepares financial records of yearly costs (overhead) for the wood and metal shop consumables/repairs. Creates plans/proposals for purchasing new equipment and updating dust collection.
Working Conditions

Wood shop and metal shop (instructional lab). Primarily in one building, occasionally is asked to visit other buildings for consultations.

Physical Requirements

Standing majority of the day (concrete floors), lifting over 20lbs regularly, using tools with constant vibration, job requires wearing hearing and eye protection consistently to prevent long tern damage.

Qualifications Basic Qualifications

College Degree (Bachelors) in a related field (Studio Art, Sculpture, Furniture, etc.) or related work experience, plus at least 5 years of experience in both professional and academic/instructional shops. Experience using and training…
