Tenure-Track or Tenured Professor in Ukrainian Studies

Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures plans to appointa tenure-track or tenured professor in Ukrainian philology andculture. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses atthe undergraduate and graduate levels, including first-yearseminars, survey courses, and advanced seminars. We are seeking an energetic colleague committed to supporting and building ourprogram in Ukrainian studies, introducing undergraduates to thestudy of this part of the world, advising advanced work with graduate students, and connecting Ukrainian studies to other disciplines and regions in creative ways.

We expect the candidate to share fully in the Department's administrative and advisingduties as well as participating broadly in the academic culture ofthe university. Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching and innovative scholarship is imperative.

We understand philology in a broad sense of the term, as an overlapbetween the study of language and culture. The ideal candidate willbe able to present Ukraine's complex, multiethnic culture andhistory to both undergraduates and graduate students. Knowledge ofa related field or of another Slavic language and culture is highly desirable. We also welcome broader interdisciplinary skills thatbring together fields such as linguistics, cultural studies,literary studies, medieval studies, Jewish studies, history,anthropology, music, film, theater, and the visual arts.

In Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, tenure-track positions are untenured. External applicants and finalists considered for a tenured appointment will need to complete the same procedures as external applicants and finalists in a search designatedspecifically for a tenured appointment.

Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. required by the time the appointment begins. Native ornear-native Ukrainian and fluency in English are required.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching is required.

  • Candidates for a tenure-track position are required to submit namesand contact information of 3 referees, who will be asked by asystem-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation oncethe candidate's application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is consideredcomplete only when the three letters have been received. At leastone letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate's undergraduate thesis advisor, chair of the dissertationcommittee, or primary advisor in a postdoctoral fellowship.

    Candidates for a tenured position need not submit reference lettersat this stage; simply skip the reference page of the application.

    8. The authorization to release information to Harvard must be provided as part of the application process in ARIeS and signed byall candidates for a tenured position.
