About the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our drug substance process engineering and modeling team in Cambridge, MA, within Sanofi’s R&D CMC Synthetic organization. This role collaborates closely with colleagues in France to support digital development and implement innovative ways of working. Your expertise in chemical engineering, process system modeling, and lab automation will be crucial in creating a self‑driving lab for small molecule drug substance process development and optimization.

Responsibilities

Lab automation & data generation:
Work closely with laboratory teams (process chemists, engineers, and the high‑throughput experimentation team) to design, develop, and deploy cutting‑edge automated systems, robotics, instrumentation, and digital workflows. Program and develop automated laboratory systems, support software development and deployment to automate workflows, integrate analytical instruments with laboratory software, and ensure seamless communication with Sanofi’s internal data management services.

Mechanistic & data‑driven model building:
Build mechanistic, hybrid, and data‑driven modeling solutions to support small molecule process development. Collaborate with process development teams to integrate crystallization modeling into overall process design and optimization workflows.

Model deployment at scale:
Assist in developing and deploying digital twins for both batch and continuous processes, ensuring alignment with Quality by Design principles. Implement and scale Model Predictive Control systems, leveraging advanced process models to optimize performance in real‑time, maintain product quality, and enhance operational efficiency across large‑scale manufacturing environments.

Communication & documentation:
Provide concise technical presentations to project teams, cross‑functional teams, and management. Document all work on projects and continuous improvements through technical reports.

External collaboration:
Establish and extend external networks by leading academic, industrial, or government sponsored collaborations and steering projects that address gaps in scientific knowledge.

Qualifications

Advanced degree required:
PhD in chemical engineering, mathematics or physics, or master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience, or bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience.

Strong skills in writing and optimizing scripts in programming languages such as Python, Matlab, C#, or Visual Basic. Experience designing and implementing automated laboratory processes from concept through full deployment. Demonstrated ability to translate mathematical models into computer programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with crystallization modeling and simulation tools (e.g., gPROMS). Familiarity with laboratory analytical measurement instruments or relevant work experience in a pharmaceutical sciences laboratory setting. Domain knowledge in small molecule process development with industrial applications or academic publications.

Some knowledge of multivariate analysis, chemometrics and statistics. Experience in development and scale‑up of continuous processes.

Soft Skills

Ability to work as part of a team, engaging other scientists with complementary skill sets in pharmaceutical development. Change agent mentality, proposing novel approaches to challenging scientific questions and exploring new modeling approaches.

Benefits

Salary range: $ - $, determined in relation to experience. Comprehensive health and wellbeing benefits, high‑quality healthcare, prevention and wellness programs, gender‑neutral parental leave, and other perks.
