Do you want to use your engineering skills to make a difference in the Commonwealth? Civil, mechanical and environmental engineers who have a passion for transportation are needed for numerous entry level positions throughout the organization.
Our entry level Civil Engineers perform a variety of tasks including preparing and/or reviewing plans, specifications, and cost estimates for MassDOT projects; preparing and/or reviewing reports, studies and analyzing data; performing calculations relating to engineering problems; and performing engineering surveys.
Duties and Responsibilities- Supervises and inspects construction/maintenance contract work for compliance with department-controlled documents, accepted principles and practices, and engineering standards.
- Follows through inspections to ensure that necessary maintenance, repair and/or replacement procedures are undertaken and/or reported to the Supervisor.
- Provides engineering data for civil engineering projects such as buildings or highway construction in order to plan, design, and construct structures and facilities such as buildings, bridges, roads and drainage.
- Maintains project records, prepares reports on such matters as construction costs, field engineering and project status. Prepares contract quantity estimates for assigned contract(s).
- Assists with the writing of various locations maintenance contracts.
- Documents construction progress by following MassDOT project recordkeeping policies and procedures as directed by the Resident Engineer;
Prepares and/or provides information for Bi-weekly pay estimates (CQE’s); information for B&E Estimates at 50% and 75% or as needed; information for the project diary for completion by 9am for the preceding day;
Maintains project records relative to quantity documentation (QCL, Calc Book);
Maintain the RMS-360 in close consultation with the District Materials Engineer;
Prepares daily reports and pay slips accurately and timely;
Monitors QCL items for required sketches and summary sheets;
Assists in reviewing baseline schedules and monthly updates;
Enters traffic information into the Event Reporting System (ERS);
Ensures that items tracked as force accounts are documented properly and the daily force account sheets are prepared and signed by both the Contractor and MassDOT personnel;
Prepares CSD-683 forms for all overruns, underruns and EWO's;
Reviews all contractor submittals for extra work and provides recommendations to the Resident Engineer;
Reviews contractor claims for compensation and provides information required for preparing a defense of the claim;
Reviews contractor procedural submittals for constructability issues and provides comments to the Resident Engineer for incorporation into their response. - Performs related duties as required.
- Responds to emergency calls 24/7.
- Proficiency in various civil engineering software (AutoCAD, GIS, excel, etc).
- Ability to work/interact in a diverse workforce.
- Excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals.

Unit E Sign on BonusThis position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts:
1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck.
2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
