About This Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Chemical Engineer to join our Small Molecule Chemical Development team. This position provides an exciting opportunity to lead and mentor scientific and engineering teams in the development of robust processes for the synthesis of a wide range of Small Molecules across various modalities. The Associate Director of Engineering will gain experience in early‑phase to late‑phase drug development and in the design and development of manufacturing processes for clinical and commercial therapeutics.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Lead collaborative development for manufacturing teams to design and conduct laboratory experiments to optimize and characterize the processes of Biogen assets, emphasizing improvement in process understanding, robustness, and productivity.
- Design and lead experimental planning to advance the Biogen portfolio.
- Lead project teams toward the implementation of safe, efficient, and robust chemical processes of Biogen drug candidates.
- Oversee the management of key laboratory and kilo‑lab instrumentation.
- Develop the fundamental process knowledge needed to support the transition of chemical and biochemical processes from laboratory scale to manufacturing partners.
- Collaborate with Process Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Solid Form, Oligo, and Separations colleagues to develop the knowledge and controls needed for the supply of clinical materials and characterization of the process to support regulatory filings.
- Communicate project team research results effectively through reports, discussions, and team meetings, including engagement in CMC activities such as authoring the CMC section of INDs.
- Interact with Contract Research Organizations as project needs evolve, which may include travel.
- Initiate innovative research projects to improve fundamental understanding and control of Biogen processes.
- Expand your external presence by professionally representing Biogen in consortia and conferences.
- Engage, mentor, and prepare future chemical engineering leaders.

Required Qualifications- Ph.D. with 6+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or biotech settings.
- M.S. with 8+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or biotech settings.
- BS with 10+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or biotech settings.
- Strong background in the theory and practice of pharmaceutical chemical engineering, including demonstrated understanding of crystallization techniques, experience with process characterization, familiarity with process safety and tech transfer protocols, and good problem‑solving skills.
- Experience in crystallization and isolation of APIs across several modalities is preferred, as well as familiarity with analytical tools and various purification techniques.
- Good communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
Base salary range: $ – $. Compensation is determined through an analytical approach that considers relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity. Employees are eligible for short‑term and long‑term incentives, including cash bonuses and equity incentive opportunities.
