Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Robotics
Helbling USA is an engineering consulting firm with expertise in robotics, mechatronics, medical devices, and laboratory instruments – and most importantly, innovation. We are in Cambridge, MA and are looking for an experienced Electrical/Firmware Engineer to join our talented team. As such, you will execute projects that turn ideas into technically substantiated products (and everything in between).
The ideal candidates are well-rounded team players who thrive in an entrepreneurial and dynamic environment - we regularly shift gears between ideation, theoretical analysis, modeling and simulation, detailed design, prototyping/building, testing, debugging, and, crucially, communicating that work with our clients.
Ideal candidates will have experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems, including architecture definition, component selection, schematic and PCB design, power electronics, and circuit modeling/simulation. They should be proficient in bringing designs from concept through prototyping, testing, and deployment on real hardware, with hands-on experience in firmware development for microcontrollers and embedded platforms. Candidates should also possess strong electrical engineering fundamentals, practical troubleshooting skills, and be comfortable working directly with hardware in laboratory and prototype environments.
RoleResponsibilities
- Actively contribute to developing innovative medical and lab systems, robotics and/or automation solutions, with a focus on Electrical Engineering
- Engineer mixed-signal and power electronic PCBs (via Altium Designer or similar), including schematic capture, multilayer board layout, component selection, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) considerations
- Perform circuit simulation and component modeling (using SPICE (or similar)-based tools or MATLAB/Simulink) to validate electrical performance, optimize designs, and predict system behavior prior to prototyping
- Develop embedded firmware for implementing logic, sensors interfaces, signal processing, communication protocols (UART, SPI, I²C, CAN), and data logging (DAQ)
- Specify and design electrical systems peripheral to electromagnetic machinery, including electric motors, different types of actuators (servos, piezo, solenoid, etc.)
- Collaborate closely with mechanical design and software to ensure cohesive system architectures and robust hardware integration
- Support prototyping, system bring-up, and debugging of integrated hardware/software systems
- Manage preparation and presentation of project reports, reviews, and weekly client updates
- Minimum a BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, , or related field and minimum of 5 years of related engineering full-time professional experience or equivalent (advanced technical degrees preferred)
- Eligible to work in the US without sponsorship (unfortunately we cannot sponsor H1B visa)
- Proficiency in software development for controlling hardware (e.g., Python, C, C++, Matlab, embedded systems)
- Solid understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles
- Hands-on experience with building, integrating, and debugging physical systems strongly preferred
- Excellent communication skills (e.g. ability to explain technical issues to a non-technical audience)
- Knowledge and/or previous experience developing products under normative standards such as: IEC 60601, 61010, IEC
62304, ISO
13485, ISO
14971, IEC 80601 - Entrepreneurial “can do” attitude.
- Excited to work for a company that values diversity
- Varied and exciting projects in Robotics, Automation, and Med Tech, with motivated and collaborative teammates
- Opportunity to support growing US branches and connection to Helbling offices in Europe
- Respect for work‑life balance
- Annual base salary ranges from $110,000 to $150,000
- PTO, parental leave, sick time, and public holidays
