Our client, an emerging biotechnology organization transitioning from early-stage operations to commercialization, is seeking an experienced Cost Accounting Consultant to build and implement a scalable cost accounting function.
This is a critical, hands‑on engagement focused on establishing the financial infrastructure required to support growth, enhance operational visibility, and enable informed executive decision‑making. The consultant will play a key role in designing and implementing end‑to‑end cost accounting processes, ensuring the organization is well‑positioned to scale efficiently.
Mandate OverviewThe selected consultant will lead the development of a robust cost accounting framework aligned with a growth‑stage biotech environment. This includes both execution and strategic design, ensuring sustainability and scalability of the function.
Key Areas of Focus- Design and implement COGS methodologies across materials, labor, and overhead
- Build a scalable cost structure to support financial reporting and operational insight
- Develop reporting packages for the CFO, including margin and cost driver visibility
- Align finance with manufacturing, lab, and supply chain operations
- Lead the end‑to‑end buildout of cost accounting processes in a pre‑scale environment.
- Translate operational activity into accurate and meaningful financial insights for leadership.
- Implement standard costing and variance analysis frameworks.
- Establish disciplined cost tracking and allocation methodologies.
- Develop monthly reporting and close processes related to COGS and inventory.
- Partner cross‑functionally to ensure alignment between finance, operations, and supply chain.
- Document processes and implement controls to support audit readiness and compliance.
- Provide practical recommendations for efficiency, scalability, and reporting quality.
- Hands‑on, pragmatic consultant who thrives in building and transformation environments.
- Strong communicator able to translate complex cost structures into clear business insights.
- Comfortable operating in a lean, evolving organization with changing priorities.
- 15+ years of progressive cost accounting experience, including senior leadership or consulting roles in a Biotech/Life Sciences environment.
- Proven track record of building or transforming cost accounting functions in growth‑stage environments.
- Deep expertise in COGS modeling, standard costing and variance analysis, inventory accounting and valuation, and cost allocation methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP relates to inventory and COGS.
