The role

Secure Bio is a nonprofit working to protect the world from catastrophic pandemics. As advances in biotechnology lower the barriers to engineering pathogens, our mission is to ensure humanity’s detection and alert systems are ready. As part of this mission, our Detection team is building a pathogen-agnostic pandemic early warning system. We operate the world’s largest metagenomic biosurveillance network, which performs daily sequencing of wastewater samples and nasal swabs to screen for emerging pathogens.

We’re looking for a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to build, scale, and maintain the infrastructure behind our pandemic monitoring system. We need to automatically and reliably analyze high volumes of sequencing data every week – and we must be secure in the face of determined attackers. In the next year, we need to increase the amount of data we process, while massively reducing our processing time and increasing our reliability.

This will put huge demands on our storage, compute, security, and automations – none of these goals can happen without good cloud infrastructure.

We’re looking for an experienced and pragmatic engineer who’s excited about both high-level strategy/architecture and practical implementation. You’ll be the sole infrastructure engineer at Secure Bio Detection and a key member of our Pipelines team as we meet our ambitious scaling and speed goals.

Responsibilities
  • Own the "how should we build this?" decisions for cloud infrastructure
  • Be the primary owner and administrator of our AWS accounts
  • Design and implement robust automation, reliability, and observability infrastructure
  • Improve and maintain AWS permissions and security
  • Own Git Hub administration, CI/CD configuration, app integrations, and related Dev Ops
  • Aggressively optimize infrastructure for cost and speed
  • Extensively use AI tools/agentic coding to accelerate and improve your work
Requirements
  • 5+ years of cloud infrastructure experience
  • Deep hands-on experience with AWS
  • Experience standing up and improving infrastructure in small teams with minimal oversight
  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code (IaC); terraform strongly preferred
  • Security-first mindset; experience with AWS security tooling and best practices
  • Adept at collaborating with scientists and software engineers to understand scientific problems and design infrastructure strategies
  • Experience with Github and CI/CD
Preferred
  • Experience building automations in AWS (lambda, step functions)
  • Experience provisioning and managing databases
  • Experience with our tech stack: python, docker, nextflow, etc
  • Experience with scientific computing in AWS (Batch, etc.)
  • Broad experience with information security; comfortable being our liaison with security consultants and internal point person on security decisions
  • Familiar with compliance frameworks for federal contracting
