Do you have the technical depth to architect the future of digital publishing — and the collaborative instincts to bring others with you?

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world‑leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

We are looking for a Content Architect to join our Content Services team — a senior, highly technical role at the heart of our digital publishing operation. This is a rare opportunity to shape how world‑class education content is structured, delivered, and experienced across digital formats.

If you are driven by the pursuit of potential — your own and others' — this role offers real scope to lead, innovate, and make a lasting impact.

About the role

As Content Architect, you will own content strategy and workflow design for a range of digital products.

Working cross‑functionally with Editorial, Production, Platform Technologies, and external suppliers, you will ensure content files and metadata meet all internal and third‑party technical standards — while continuously driving innovation, automation, and quality throughout our publishing pipelines.

This is a senior subject‑matter expert position that bridges content, technology, and publishing operations.

You will be accountable for the technical integrity and efficiency of our digital content architecture, from initial discovery through to post‑publication maintenance — and will be relied upon as a trusted adviser by stakeholders at all levels.

Additional responsibilities and accountabilities include:

  • Defining and maintaining content strategy and technical specifications for digital publishing products (ePub, HTML, PDF, XML, and more), and being accountable for their adoption and consistency across teams and suppliers.
  • Designing the structure, architecture, and user experience of digital outputs — covering navigation, accessibility, multimedia integration, and multi‑device optimisation.
  • Developing and optimising end‑to‑end content workflows from inception through post‑publication maintenance and being accountable for measurable improvements in efficiency and quality.
  • Leading projects and temporary teams to implement new workflows, managing schedules, resources, and risks to successful delivery.
  • Liaising with internal teams (Content Operations, Content Development, Platform Development, Editorial, Sales and others) and external suppliers and typesetters to align on standards and resolve technical challenges.
  • Championing automation and process innovation to maximise productivity across Content Services.
  • Providing training, guidance, and ongoing support to Content Services teams on technical standards and best practice.
  • Representing Content Services in forecasting, discovery, and proof‑of‑concept exercises, contributing expert insight to shape product and platform decisions.

This position has been classified as a hybrid role, requiring the selected candidate to typically spend 40–60% of their time collaborating and connecting face‑to‑face at their dedicated location. Aside from our hybrid principles, other flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements should you require adjustments due to a disability or long‑term health condition.

About

You

You will bring deep knowledge of XML standards and digital publishing formats — including ePub, PDF, and web publishing standards.

You will have demonstrable experience of cross‑functional project delivery, software QA testing, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and credibly to non‑technical stakeholders.

Familiarity with command‑line toolsets, content management systems, and specialist content tools such as TeX and image processing software (Photoshop or Image Magick) are strongly desired.

An understanding of academic or education publishing production processes will be important to your success in this role.

If you meet the above minimum requirements, we encourage you to…
