Executive Director, Biometrics – CVRMThe Opportunity

Are you an accomplished biometrics leader with a passion for applying quantitative science to the development of transformative medicines? Would you like to shape the strategy and execution of clinical development programs across one of AstraZeneca’s most important and fastest-growing Therapy Areas?

As Executive Director, Biometrics – CVRM, you will be a senior leader within the CVRM Development organization and a core member of the relevant CVRM leadership team. You will lead the biometrics strategy across a disease area franchise, providing scientific and strategic direction for Biometrics. You will be accountable for ensuring that robust, innovative and decision-relevant evidence is generated throughout the development lifecycle.

Working across a global matrix, you will influence portfolio decisions, strengthen regulatory strategies, enable efficient delivery and build a high-performing biometrics organization equipped for the future.

Key Accountabilities

Lead and develop a global statistics organization comprising individual contributors and people leaders within a matrix environment. Establish a clear vision, priorities and operating model aligned with the CVRM development strategy.

Ensure that clinical development programs use appropriate statistical designs, data sources, analytical methods, tools and processes to address their objectives clearly and robustly.

You will provide oversight for the quality and timeliness of Biometrics contributions to clinical development planning, study design, protocols, statistical analysis plans, clinical study reports, regulatory submissions and responses to health authorities.

A key part of the role will be ensuring that decision-makers understand both the expected value and the uncertainty associated with development and investment choices.

Work with CVRM and enterprise partners to identify and deliver measurable improvements in productivity, quality and speed. This will include supporting the responsible adoption of AI-enabled and generative AI tools for activities such as data analysis, statistical programming, document creation, submission preparation and knowledge retrieval.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • MScin Biostatistics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or another relevant quantitative discipline.
  • Extensive experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or life sciences industry, with a strong understanding of the end-to-end drug development lifecycle in cardiovascular, renal, metabolic or related disease areas.
  • Demonstrated expertise across multiple clinical development phases, ideally including large, complex and pivotal Phase III programs.
  • Significant experience leading statistical and programming contribution across multiple clinical development programs in a global, matrixed organization.
  • Strong understanding of statistical principles and regulatory expectations relevant to clinical trials, including estimates, multiplicity, missing data, interim analyses and adaptive designs.
  • Experience leading organizational change, capability building, productivity initiatives or digital transformation.
  • A strong external scientific network and evidence of contribution to professional, academic or cross-industry groups.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, with the confidence to engage senior leaders, governance bodies, regulators and external experts.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience leading enterprise-wide or cross-Therapy Area initiatives involving AI, automation, operating-model transformation or productivity --improvement.
  • PhDin Biostatistics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or another relevant quantitative discipline.
  • Experience applying or evaluating AI-enabled, machine-learning or generative AI approaches in clinical development, data analysis or scientific operations.
  • Understanding of data integrity, clinical data standards and regulatory expectations, including CDISC standards.
  • Experience with real-world evidence, digital health technologies, patient-generated data or novel clinical outcome assessments.
