Director of Research & Development

Do you want to lead the development of the newest additions to perhaps the world’s most widely-deployed text analytics suite? Do you like seeing your work solving real-world problems even more than you like seeing it cited in publications like ACL or SIGIR? Basis Technology is looking for a leader for our R&D team that builds the first versions of new text analytics products and solutions, informed by keen knowledge of both what research says is possible and what customers say is needed.

This position reports to the V.P. of Engineering.

• Serve as the R&D team’s Product Owner, deciding the most valuable work to do sprint-by-sprint to fulfill larger goals set in collaboration with the VP, Engineering, the CTO, and other members of the executive and product management teams.
• Technical Owner, deciding how the work is done to fulfill his or her research and engineering architectural vision facilitating by whom it’s done to effectively engage the entire team, and implementing specific items of work (e.g., stories, bugs) if needed
• Serve as personnel manager of the members of the R&D team, mentoring, developing, managing and recruiting its members
• Serve as a key member of the engineering management team advising on department-wide decisions
• Engage with the broader marketplace as well as current and prospective customers to inform R&D strategic goals
• Advise other teams on R&D-related topics as needed
• Oversee technical portions of externally funded R&D projects
• Represent the organization to the research community, including through occasional service to it (e.g., as a reviewer or organizer)
• Support the establishment of teams to productize technology spun out of the R&D team
• Collaborate with internal development infrastructure providers

Basis Technology

• PhD or equivalent in NLP, Information Retrieval, Computer Science, or a similar field, including respected publications
• 6+ years implementing production-quality, multi-threaded software (e.g., in Java)
• 3+ years managing a team of engineers building production-quality software products
• Eagerness to lead and serve a collaborative, consensus-driven team
• Desire to solve customers’ problems through clean and creative solutions
