Position & Location

Certified Educational ASL Interpreter (40 hours per week / 10 months)

Cambridge Rindge & Latin School / World Languages Department

Opportunity

The educational ASL interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication among students and staff district-wide who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, colleagues, and other personnel in the school system. The interpreter provides interpreting and support services to students and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing and are being educated or teaching with Cambridge Public Schools.

Other duties may be performed when they do not interfere with interpreting, including tutoring, participation in meetings, and active membership on the school’s educational team. This position reports directly to the JK-12 World Language Director.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expressive and voice interpretation for students or staff who are deaf or hard of hearing in the educational setting (including ASL, MCED, PSE, and/or oral interpreting).
  • Collaborate with classroom teacher/supervisor to provide tutoring/review services as necessary for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, when it does not interfere with interpreting.
  • Assist with setting up note‑taking services for students/staff who are deaf or hard of hearing when necessary.
  • Participate in educational team activities, either in person or via report, including team meetings, IEP conferences, and informal staffing.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.
  • Provide and/or assist in providing in‑services to hearing students, staff, and parents on sign language, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting, and consumer education.
  • Interpret for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings when requested in advance.
  • Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Fluency in ASL and English.
  • Deaf interpreter training and specialized knowledge of unique communication modes.
  • Familiarity with standard practices and ethical decision‑making in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct and the Standard Practice Papers.
  • Minimum of one to five years of experience as a working interpreter (or equivalent).
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Demonstrated sufficient linguistic fluency and cognitive flexibility.
  • Advanced cultural knowledge of the Deaf community and its resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in a diverse K‑12 setting.
Terms of Employment

This is a full‑time, 10‑month/40‑hour a week position. The position includes a generous benefits package and is eligible for the Cambridge Retirement System.
