Life Science Chief Engineer
Job Description SummaryThe incumbent is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and construction activities for a group of buildings. Specific responsibilities include work-scheduling of all account personnel, establishing work standards, conducting site evaluations/audits, overall inventory/equipment usage, budget control, troubleshooting/problem solving, customer relations, and special project work.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities- Operate advanced building systems in a critical environment ensuring minimal downtime.
- Read and understand complex drawings, ladder diagrams, and schematics.
- Oversee and coordinate work for a multi-trade maintenance team across multiple building locations, including roadways, sidewalks, landscaping, and parking structures.
- Collaborate with the account manager to ensure timely safety trainings.
- Ensure preventive maintenance of all building systems is performed timely and repairs are executed according to procedures.
- Monitor all BMS and energy management platforms used at the properties.
- Assist with water treatment and testing as needed.
- Ensure timely completion of work order documentation.
- Establish and maintain work performance standards.
- Conduct quality assurance checks and manage materials inventory.
- Coordinate and oversee special project work.
- Resolve on-site service delivery issues.
- Participate in ongoing technical training programs.
- Maintain effective customer relations.
- Keep logs of ongoing construction work and attend construction meetings to supervise work per specifications.
- Proactively identify capital projects for building ownership.
- Communicate effectively with customers through written and oral means.
- Assist junior employees with training and development.
- Attend training sessions to enhance knowledge.
- Three to five years of supervisory experience with up-to-date knowledge of facility O&M procedures.
- Construction management/supervision experience required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience as a Building Engineer or similar role, with knowledge of plumbing, electrical, fire, HVAC, pneumatic, DDC, and building automation systems.
- Experience reviewing MEP and fire alarm systems installation per design documents.
- Massachusetts Trades License.
- Participation in on-call schedule for after-hours calls; ability to work overtime as needed.
- Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills; effective communication with co-workers, customers, tenants, and vendors.
- Ability to obtain certification as an Asbestos Project Worker if required.
- Ability to work at various properties as assigned.
- Strong technical, mechanical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of safe operation of equipment and tools, including snow blowers.
- Project coordination skills and multitasking ability.
- Proficient in computer skills, including Building Automation Systems.
- Familiarity with OSHA, NEC, NFC, and Life Safety codes.
- Experience reading blueprints and working in critical environments preferred.
