Senior Scientist, Mass Spectrometry/Protein Characterization
We are seeking a Senior Scientist to serve as the LC/MS subject matter expert within our Protein Sciences team in Cambridge, MA. This laboratory‑based position requires a proven ability in the acquisition and interpretation of LC/MS data from both intact protein and peptide mapping workflows. You will collaborate with scientific teams across the organization to advance drug targets and complement biophysical and biochemical characterizations of recombinant proteins.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Apply advanced Mass Spectrometry expertise to drive characterization of proteins across diverse classes (soluble and membrane).
- Collaborate with scientific teams to advance drug targets and communicate results.
- Provide support for complementary biophysical techniques, including SEC, SEC‑MALS, mass photometry, Fida Neo, NanoDSF, and other methods as required.
- Mentor direct reports, developing their expertise and guiding professional development.
- Characterize recombinant proteins of various classes, including cytosolic, secreted, membrane, and refolded proteins.
- Maintain and oversee LC/MS equipment and laboratory operations.
- Innovate and drive proteomic and lipidomic workflows where applicable.
- Manage workload and project demands, communicate experimental results, advise on methods, troubleshoot, and execute experiments.
- Contribute to annual budgets and strategies while maintaining modern instrumentation.
- PhD in a related field and/or several years of industrial laboratory‑based LC/MS experience (biochemistry, chemistry, molecular & cellular biology, or biophysics) with 6–12 years of experience; alternatively, a BS or MS with 12–18 years of experience.
- In‑depth knowledge of Waters Connect and Thermo Scientific Xcalibur software.
- Hands‑on experience and responsibility for Thermo Orbitrap and Waters instrumentation coupled to UPLC systems.
- Peptide mapping expertise and knowledge of PTMs.
- Proficiency with data analysis software packages for sequence mapping and intact mass deconvolution (e.g., Protein Metrics Byos, Biopharma Finder, Proteome Discoverer).
- Knowledge of protein expression systems.
- Expertise in troubleshooting and maintenance of LC/MS systems.
- Excellent organizational, communication, record‑keeping, and team‑working abilities.
- Experience with mass spectrometry data analysis of peptides and NCEs.
- Experience with biophysical techniques within a multidisciplinary environment (e.g., analytical SEC, SEC‑MALS, mass photometry, Fida Neo, NanoDSF).
- Knowledge of the drug discovery pipeline, including translational and clinical pharmacology as it relates to mass spectrometry analysis.
- Experience in managing or mentoring junior scientists.
The base salary for this position ranges from $117,600 to $154,400 per year, adjusted for internal equity and candidate qualifications.
