Position: Research Assistant I

Company Description

By working at Harvard University, you join a vibrant community that advances Harvard's world-changing mission in meaningful ways, inspires innovation and collaboration, and builds skills and expertise. We are dedicated to creating a diverse and welcoming environment where everyone can thrive.

Job Summary

In the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, we research and teach how the collective behavior of molecules and cells forms the basis of life. We are driven by a passion for discovery and value collaborative approaches to scientific inquiry, where connections between people fuel interdisciplinary science and break boundaries across varied experimental systems. Against a backdrop of cutting‑edge biological research, we work as a team of educators and mentors to inspire and train the next generation of scientists and global citizens.

The Prigozhin Lab at Harvard University develops new biophysical methods for multicolor and dynamic biological imaging at the molecular scale. Our work focuses on capturing cellular dynamics by cryo‑vitrifying samples after defined time delays following stimulation, using custom cryo‑plunging and high‑pressure freezing instruments. In parallel, we are working to achieve multicolor electron imaging via cathodoluminescence—electron‑beam–induced optical emission. We apply these methods to study G‑protein–coupled receptor signaling, visualize biomolecular condensate formation, and map complex multicellular assemblies such as bacterial biofilms, organoids, and tissues.

Job-Specific

Responsibilities

We invite applications for a full‑time Research Assistant I position. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive technical support and conduct experimental work for projects aimed at developing and applying high‑resolution biological imaging methods. The position offers an opportunity to gain broad experience at the interface of cell biology, chemistry, and engineering, and the Research Assistant will perform experiments with increasing independence under the guidance and mentorship of the principal investigator and senior lab members.

Responsibilities will span several areas depending on the candidate’s background and interests.

  • In cell and molecular biology, the Research Assistant may perform mammalian cell culture and maintenance, transfections or viral transductions, and plasmid design, cloning, and preparation.
  • In instrument prototyping and fabrication, the role may involve CAD design; 3D printing and laser cutting; CNC and manual machining; and the assembly and testing of custom instrumentation components.
  • In imaging and microscopy, the Research Assistant may contribute to electron microscopy experiments, including cryo‑EM, cryo‑focused ion beam milling, and room‑temperature TEM/SEM, as well as light‑microscopy experiments using widefield and confocal fluorescence and super‑resolution techniques such as STED and single‑molecule localization microscopy.
  • The Research Assistant may also gain experience in optics and computation, including optical design and alignment, numerical modeling and simulation using software such as COMSOL or Lumerical FDTD, instrument control and automation using LabVIEW, as well as data and image analysis.
  • The position also includes general laboratory support, such as preparing reagents and solutions, organizing and maintaining equipment and supplies, and documenting protocols and experimental results.
Working Conditions
  • This position is fully on‑site; hybrid or remote work is not available, and the successful candidate must be able to work in person in Cambridge, MA.
Basic Qualifications
  • A B.A./B.S. degree in any area of science, engineering, or a related field is required.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • At least one year of prior laboratory research experience, which may include undergraduate research, is strongly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of general laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Proficiency with basic computer tools, including the Windows operating system and the Google Drive suite, is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as…
